Spain players celebrate victory over France in World Cup semifinal

Spain Defeats France to Reach the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final

Spain advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final after defeating France 2-0 at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, delivering a composed performance built on defensive organization and efficient attacking play.

Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro scored the goals that carried Luis de la Fuente’s side into the championship match, where Spain will face the winner of the semifinal between England and Argentina at New York–New Jersey Stadium.

Spain Takes Control Early

France entered the semifinal as slight favorites, and Kylian Mbappé threatened on the counterattack during the opening stages. However, Spain created the first major chance when Lamine Yamal, one day after celebrating his 19th birthday, reached the ball ahead of Lucas Digne and was brought down inside the penalty area.

Oyarzabal calmly converted the resulting penalty, beating goalkeeper Mike Maignan to give Spain the lead. The advantage doubled shortly afterward when Porro combined brilliantly with Dani Olmo before finishing the move with a precise strike.

Disciplined Defense Secures the Victory

France responded by introducing Désiré Doué and Rayan Cherki in an effort to spark a comeback, but Spain’s defense remained in control. Goalkeeper Unai Simón frequently acted as a sweeper outside his area, while Marc Cucurella produced a crucial challenge to deny Mbappé during one of France’s best attacking moments.

The final whistle confirmed Spain’s return to the World Cup final, while France will now play for third place on Saturday.

De la Fuente Praises His Squad

Head coach Luis de la Fuente credited the team’s long-term commitment to its playing philosophy for the achievement.

“We started almost four years ago with an idea, and we’ve remained faithful to it. Today we faced one of the best national teams in the world, but they were up against the best team in the world. These players deserve everything because they have consistently shown commitment, solidarity, generosity, and talent,” he said.

Porro also celebrated the accomplishment, describing the qualification as beyond his highest expectations while emphasizing that reaching the final was a collective achievement rather than an individual one.

Spain Continues an Impressive Tournament

Oyarzabal’s penalty marked his 30th international goal, making him the sixth player to reach that milestone for Spain. He has now scored 18 goals in his last 20 appearances for the national team.

Spain has also demonstrated remarkable defensive consistency throughout the tournament, recording six clean sheets in seven matches and conceding only two goals during the competition in North America.

The victory keeps Spain in contention for another World Cup title. The national team previously lifted the trophy in 2010 and will now attempt to add a second championship when it plays in Sunday’s final.
