The Democratic Option (OD), an opposition political party in the Dominican Republic, held its third national day of mobilization on Wednesday with coordinated protests in Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana, and New York City. Party leaders, members, and supporters gathered to call for government action on a range of issues they say are affecting citizens across the country.
During the demonstrations, participants highlighted the increasing cost of living, alleging that rising prices for goods and services continue to place financial pressure on Dominican households. The party also raised concerns about police conduct and called for measures to address what it described as unresolved cases of abuse.
Opposition to Proposed “Gag Law”
A central focus of the protests was the party’s opposition to the proposed “Gag Law”, legislation that Democratic Option argues could undermine freedom of expression and other democratic rights. Demonstrators reiterated their position that any legal reforms affecting public speech and the media should protect constitutional freedoms and democratic principles.
The party maintained that safeguarding civil liberties should remain a priority while public debate continues over the proposed legislation.
Calls for Government Action
According to Democratic Option, the coordinated demonstrations were intended to draw attention to what it described as growing public dissatisfaction with current economic and social conditions. Party representatives urged the government to adopt policies aimed at easing the burden on households, strengthening protections for human rights, and responding to citizens’ concerns.
The protests formed part of the party’s broader campaign to advocate for policy changes that it says would improve living conditions while reinforcing democratic institutions and fundamental freedoms in the Dominican Republic.
