Construction officially began Tuesday on the first municipal market in Santo Domingo Norte, marking a significant investment in the municipality’s commercial infrastructure. The project, valued at RD$87.7 million, is being developed by the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED) and is expected to create a modern marketplace for local merchants.
Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, the minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, which will feature 82 commercial stalls distributed across two levels.
A Modern Marketplace for Local Commerce
According to information released by the ministry, the market will include 1,445.84 square meters of construction on a 2,686.83-square-meter site. The first floor will accommodate 54 sales stalls, along with five dedicated spaces for poultry, fish and meat vendors. An additional 28 commercial stalls will operate on the second level.
The project also includes amenities designed to improve both vendor operations and the customer experience. Planned features include parking areas, a cafeteria, administrative offices, landscaped gardens, sidewalks and curbs, as well as restrooms for women, men and people with disabilities. The building will also be equipped with fire detection systems, electrical and sanitary installations, and air conditioning for office areas.
Officials Attend Groundbreaking Ceremony
The launch event brought together national and local officials, including Santo Domingo Province Governor Lucrecia Santana, Santo Domingo Norte Mayor Betty Gerónimo, National Institute for Price Stabilization (INESPRE) Director Isidro Torres, and Eduardo Castro, president of CQ Construcciones and the project’s lead engineer.
Municipal council members, neighborhood association leaders, community representatives and local merchants also attended the ceremony, highlighting the project’s importance for the municipality’s commercial development.
