The National Emergency and Security System (911) of the Dominican Republic has taken another step toward modernizing its emergency response capabilities by exploring the use of advanced robotics through an official visit to the facilities of Boston Dynamics, one of the world’s leading robotics companies.
The Dominican delegation met with government affairs executives and technical specialists from Boston Dynamics, who showcased the company’s latest mobile robotic technologies for public safety, industrial inspections, emergency response and operations in hazardous environments.
Evaluating Robotics for High-Risk Emergency Operations
The delegation was led by Colonel Randolfo Rijo Gómez, executive director of the 911 System; Colonel Harold Jiménez Polanco, deputy executive director; and Major Cristian Erick Moquete Denis, head of the Division of Remotely Piloted Aircraft. Representing Boston Dynamics were Kimberly Chamblin, director of government affairs, Andrew Wassef, associate director of government sales, and other company executives.
Working sessions focused on assessing how robotic technologies could be adapted to support the operational needs of the Dominican emergency response system and the agencies that participate in the country’s integrated emergency management model.
Potential Applications in Disaster Response
Discussions examined the use of robotics in scenarios involving hazardous materials (HazMat), urban search and rescue missions, post-disaster structural assessments, reconnaissance in contaminated areas and other specialized operations.
Officials said these technologies could significantly reduce the exposure of emergency personnel to dangerous environments while improving operational safety and increasing the efficiency of response efforts.
Part of the Next Generation 911 Initiative
The visit forms part of the strategic vision behind the Next Generation 911 project, an initiative designed to transform the Dominican Republic’s emergency response system through the integration of artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, intelligent video surveillance, unmanned systems and robotics.
The long-term objective is to position the Dominican Republic as the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop a fully integrated emergency response ecosystem built around these emerging technologies.
Strengthening International Technology Partnerships
Following the meetings, representatives from both organizations identified areas for future collaboration, including knowledge sharing, the evaluation of robotic platforms and the development of initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s emergency response capabilities.
The visit is part of a broader international technology cooperation agenda led by the Dominican 911 System to identify, assess and gradually incorporate innovative solutions through strategic partnerships with global leaders in robotics, artificial intelligence, data analytics and other technologies that support public safety operations.
