Renovated Guayubín Municipal Hospital Strengthens Healthcare in Montecristi

The Dominican Republic has inaugurated the renovated Guayubín Municipal Hospital following an investment of more than RD$138 million, marking another milestone in the government’s ongoing modernization of the public healthcare network in Montecristi province.

President Luis Abinader joined National Health Service (SNS) Executive Director Dr. Julio Landrón at the inauguration ceremony, where officials highlighted the project as part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare infrastructure, expand medical services and provide higher-quality care across the country’s public hospital system.

Investment Expands Infrastructure and Emergency Services

The renovation involved a total investment of RD$138,246,715.12. Of that amount, RD$65.62 million was allocated to refurbishing the hospital’s infrastructure, RD$40.03 million financed the construction of a new emergency department, and RD$32.60 million was used to purchase new medical equipment.

According to Dr. Landrón, the project reflects the administration’s goal of modernizing public hospitals with updated facilities, advanced medical equipment and improved working conditions for healthcare professionals while ensuring more dignified, timely and patient-centered care.

He said the government’s objective is to ensure that access to quality healthcare does not depend on where people live, allowing communities throughout the Dominican Republic to benefit from modern and well-equipped medical facilities.

Nearly 40,000 Residents to Benefit

The upgraded hospital is expected to directly serve approximately 39,653 residents of the municipality of Guayubín, while also providing medical services to thousands of people from surrounding communities who rely on the facility.

Officials said the improvements will enhance the hospital’s operational capacity and enable healthcare professionals to deliver a broader range of services in a safer and more efficient environment.

Part of a Broader Healthcare Modernization Plan

The reopening of Guayubín Municipal Hospital forms part of a wider investment program aimed at strengthening Montecristi’s public health network. In recent years, the National Health Service has also inaugurated the La Esperanza Primary Care Center in 2022, the Buen Hombre Primary Care Center in 2023 and the El Vigiador Primary Care Center in 2024, expanding access to essential healthcare services in underserved communities.

The government has also renovated and equipped the Dr. Julio Álvarez Acosta Municipal Hospital in Castañuelas, including modernization of its emergency department to improve patient care and emergency response capacity.

Expanded Specialized Care Across Montecristi

At the Padre Fantino Provincial Hospital, authorities have added several specialized medical units, including mental health, oncology, diabetic foot care and hemodialysis services. These additions significantly expand access to specialized treatment for residents of Montecristi and neighboring provinces.

In addition, the government invested RD$35.2 million in medical equipment for four healthcare facilities across the province, including the Los Maestros Primary Care Center, Las Matas de Santa Cruz Municipal Hospital, Padre Fantino Provincial Hospital and Dr. Julio Álvarez Acosta Municipal Hospital. Officials said these investments are intended to improve service quality and strengthen the operational capacity of the province’s public health system.
