Citizen receiving a new Dominican Republic national ID card

Dominican Republic Surpasses 2 Million New ID Cards Issued

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) announced on July 12, 2026, that it has issued more than 2 million new national identity and electoral cards since the renewal process officially began on April 12, 2026. The initiative aims to replace existing identification documents with a new generation of secure, technologically enhanced cards for citizens and eligible residents.

According to the JCE, 2,001,006 cards had been delivered within the program’s first 90 days, representing approximately 21% of the projected 9.4 million people expected to receive the upgraded document. The nationwide rollout covers Dominican citizens living in the country, legal permanent residents and members of the Dominican diaspora across 36 countries.

Milestone Recipient Recognized

The two-millionth recipient was Ana María Mejía Mercedes de Cedeño, a senior citizen who collected her new identification card at the JCE issuance center in La Romana. She was accompanied by her husband, Ernesto Cedeño de la Rosa, and received a symbolic recognition from JCE President Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo to commemorate the milestone.

Jáquez Liranzo described the upgraded cédula as a “generational, futuristic document with a patriotic vision,” highlighting its environmentally friendly materials and advanced security features designed to strengthen identity protection.

Who Has Received the New Cards?

The renewal program has recorded an almost even distribution between genders, with 1,004,502 women and 996,504 men receiving their new documents.

Adults between the ages of 31 and 35 account for the largest number of renewals with 211,810 cards issued. They are followed by the 36–40 age group with 198,558 renewals and the 26–30 group with 191,293. Citizens aged 70 and older have received 163,257 new identification cards.

Santo Domingo Leads Domestic Renewals

The Province of Santo Domingo has recorded the highest number of issued cards with 387,138, followed by the National District with 283,298 and Santiago with 200,452.

Many applicants have reported relatively short waiting times at JCE service centers, particularly at neighborhood offices, where processing is often completed in less than an hour. Extended evening schedules and weekend service have also helped accommodate increased demand during the nationwide renewal effort.

Diaspora Participation Continues to Grow

The JCE’s international offices are also processing renewals for Dominicans living abroad. The United States leads all overseas jurisdictions with 39,662 cards issued, primarily through offices serving New York, New Jersey, Orlando and Massachusetts.

In Europe, Spain ranks first with 13,151 renewed IDs, followed by Italy with 2,613 and Switzerland with 1,069. Additional issuance activity has been reported in the Lesser Antilles, Panama, Canada, the Netherlands and Santiago de Chile, reflecting the program’s reach across the Dominican diaspora.
