The Dominican Republic has taken another step toward building a more sustainable tourism industry with the launch of a permanent collaboration platform designed to strengthen local value chains, reduce the sector’s environmental footprint, and improve resilience across the country’s tourism economy.
The initiative was unveiled during the National Forum on Inclusive and Resilient Value Chains for Sustainable Tourism, where representatives from the public sector, private companies, academic institutions, and international organizations gathered to identify practical strategies for improving the competitiveness of the country’s tourism industry while expanding opportunities for local businesses.
A Permanent Community for Responsible Tourism
A key outcome of the forum was the creation of a Community of Practice on Responsible Tourism, a long-term cooperation platform that will promote the exchange of technical knowledge, best practices, and practical tools among stakeholders involved in the tourism value chain.
The initiative will initially include government institutions, business associations, universities, and international organizations committed to sustainability and the decarbonization of the Dominican tourism industry. Participants aim to coordinate actions that accelerate the adoption of more efficient, low-carbon business models capable of responding to evolving climate challenges.
Balancing Tourism Growth with Environmental Protection
The platform comes as sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in the global tourism market. Travelers are placing greater value on destinations that demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices, making sustainable development an essential component of long-term competitiveness.
For the Dominican Republic, whose economy relies heavily on tourism, the initiative seeks to ensure continued growth without compromising the coastal ecosystems and natural resources that attract millions of international visitors each year.
Among the priorities outlined during the forum are reducing emissions throughout tourism supply chains, encouraging circular economy practices, strengthening climate resilience, and helping tourism-related businesses adapt to higher environmental standards.
Expanding Opportunities for Local Suppliers
Another central objective is to increase the participation of Dominican producers and small and medium-sized enterprises within the tourism supply chain.
Organizers said stronger connections between hotels, local farmers, entrepreneurs, and service providers can generate broader economic benefits while ensuring that tourism revenues are distributed more widely, particularly in communities surrounding the country’s major tourist destinations.
The initiative also encourages closer collaboration between the private sector, academic institutions, and public agencies to foster innovation and improve the long-term resilience of the industry.
Positioning the Dominican Republic as a Regional Leader
The new collaboration platform complements ongoing national efforts to promote sustainable tourism through coastal ecosystem conservation, waste reduction, climate adaptation, and the adoption of stronger environmental standards.
Forum participants agreed that sustainability should no longer be viewed solely as an environmental responsibility but as a strategic requirement for maintaining the Dominican Republic’s competitiveness in an increasingly sustainability-focused global tourism market.
By creating this permanent partnership, the country aims to strengthen its position as a regional leader in responsible tourism while supporting economic growth, empowering local communities, and preserving the natural resources that underpin its most important industry.
