The Central Electoral Board (JCE), the Dominican Republic’s independent body responsible for civil registration and elections, has dismissed claims circulating on social media about the design of the country’s new National Identity and Electoral Card.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the JCE said images showing an allegedly altered version of the National Coat of Arms on the new identification card are false and were created using artificial intelligence.
Official Symbols Meet Legal Standards
The electoral authority stressed that the patriotic symbols incorporated into the new ID card follow the official design established under the country’s Law on National Symbols.
According to the JCE, the design has also received validation from the Instituto Duartiano, which promotes the legacy of Dominican founding father Juan Pablo Duarte, and the Permanent Commission for National Anniversaries (Comisión Permanente de Efemérides Patrias), the institution responsible for preserving the country’s historical and patriotic heritage.
Public Urged to Verify Information
The JCE urged citizens to rely on official communication channels before sharing information related to the new identity card or other public matters.
The institution warned that manipulated images generated with artificial intelligence can spread misinformation and create unnecessary confusion about official government documents.
