Dominican Republic Defeats Cuba in NORCECA U19 Women’s Championship Opener

The Dominican Republic earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Cuba in its opening match of the NORCECA U19 Women’s Continental Championship, winning by set scores of 25-19, 25-13, 21-25 and 25-22.

The tournament awards four places at the 2027 FIVB U19 Women’s World Championship, with qualification going to the four teams that reach the semifinals. The opening victory gives the Dominican side an early advantage as it begins its quest for one of those coveted spots.

Dominican Republic Controls Most of the Match

The Dominican team appeared on course for a straight-set victory after comfortably claiming the opening two sets. Cuba, however, responded by taking the third set and pushed the fourth deep into the contest before the Dominicans regained control in the decisive moments to close out the match.

Statistically, the Dominican Republic held a clear advantage in attacking, outscoring Cuba 50-30 on kills. Cuba led in blocks, 13-9, and narrowly edged the Dominicans in service aces, 6-5. The Cubans were ultimately hurt by 32 unforced errors, compared with 30 committed by the Dominican side.

Rayni Mondesí Leads the Dominican Offense

Rayni Mondesí paced the Dominican Republic with 23 points, while Leandry Almonte added 14. For Cuba, Amanda Mayor finished with 17 points and Yusdely Cabrera contributed 10.

Coaches Reflect on the Opening Victory

Dominican head coach Marcelo Cezarano described the contest as a demanding test, noting that momentum can change quickly in youth volleyball. He said his team lost intensity after winning the first two sets but managed to make the necessary adjustments to secure the result.

Cuba coach Enrique Larrazaleta said the match was closely contested and acknowledged that his team was unable to execute its game plan consistently. He added that the experience would help his players improve their concentration and ability to handle pressure in future competitions.

Next Challenge Against the United States

The Dominican Republic improved to 1-0, matching the United States at the top of Group A. The two unbeaten teams are scheduled to meet in the next round to determine first place in the group.

Cuba, meanwhile, concluded the group stage with an 0-2 record and will now await its opponent in the classification phase, where the remaining tournament positions will be decided.
