Pro Consumidor, the Dominican Republic’s National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights, is carrying out a special inspection operation at commercial establishments ahead of Father’s Day, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of July. The initiative is intended to verify that retailers comply with the offers, promotions, and pricing they advertise for the occasion.
According to Executive Director Eddy Alcántara, the campaign focuses on ensuring businesses follow consumer protection rules designed to provide shoppers with accurate information and fair commercial practices during periods of increased retail activity.
Inspectors Reviewing Prices and Promotions
As part of the operation, Pro Consumidor inspectors and advertising and pricing analysts are visiting stores in major cities, particularly throughout Greater Santo Domingo. They are checking that advertised promotions match the actual terms of sale, that prices are clearly displayed, and that businesses comply with warranty requirements and other regulations governing the sale of goods and services.
Alcántara said the annual inspections are intended to prevent commercial practices that could negatively affect consumers, especially during high-demand shopping seasons.
Consumer Protection During Peak Shopping Periods
The agency regularly increases market oversight during major retail events, including Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Black Friday, Valentine’s Day, and Three Kings’ Day, when consumer spending typically rises significantly.
According to Pro Consumidor, these inspections help promote transparency in the marketplace while encouraging businesses to comply with the country’s consumer protection standards.

Pro Consumidor is encouraging consumers to shop responsibly by comparing prices before making purchases and keeping receipts or proof of payment, which may be required if they later need to file a complaint.
The agency also reminded the public that consumers have the right to receive clear, accurate, and timely information about the products and services they purchase, as well as the right to seek redress if they believe those rights have been violated.
