Dominican Republic Expands Student Bus Fleet Before New School Year
The Dominican Republic is adding 29 new school buses to its National Student Transportation System (TRAE) ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year, strengthening free transportation services for more than two million students expected to return to classrooms on August 24.
The National Student Transportation System (TRAE), operated by the Ministry of Education, is expanding its fleet with 29 additional buses as part of preparations for the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The new vehicles are intended to improve access to safe, reliable, and free transportation for students across the country when classes resume on August 24.
The expansion follows a commitment by Education Minister Luis Miguel De Camps to continue improving education services and strengthen the nationwide transportation network, which plays a key role in helping students reach schools safely and efficiently.
Nationwide Network Continues to Grow
With the latest additions, TRAE now operates a fleet of 1,871 buses serving all 31 provinces and the National District. The system provides daily transportation for thousands of students throughout the Dominican Republic, supporting access to education while reducing transportation costs for families.
The Ministry of Education considers the transportation program an important component of its efforts to improve school attendance by ensuring that students have dependable transportation regardless of where they live.
New Buses Assigned Across Multiple Communities
The new vehicles have been distributed according to operational needs in several regions of the country. Three buses were assigned to La Ureña in Santo Domingo East, while two were delivered to El Pino in the northwestern province of Dajabón.
In María Trinidad Sánchez Province, three buses will serve the municipality of Cabrera, two will operate in El Factor, and another two were assigned to Nagua. An additional bus will provide transportation services in the community of Capotillo.
Communities in the southern region are also receiving additional transportation capacity. Two buses were allocated to Nizao, while Las Charcas and Estebanía, both in Azua Province, each received one unit. Another bus was assigned to El Cercado in San Juan Province.
Within Greater Santo Domingo, two buses will begin operating in the Las Cañitas sector. Four additional buses were designated for communities with students attending Colegio Militar Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, a military school operated by the Dominican Armed Forces. The expansion also includes two buses each for Villa Altagracia and Bonao, as well as one unit for Ciudad Modelo.
Supporting School Attendance
The deployment forms part of the Ministry of Education’s broader operational strengthening plan designed to ensure transportation services are fully available from the first day of the academic year.
By expanding the TRAE network, authorities aim to improve student access to schools, reduce the financial burden of daily transportation on households, and provide safer travel conditions that support regular attendance and better learning opportunities throughout the Dominican Republic.
