Angel Genao Makes Historic Four-Hit MLB Debut for Guardians
Dominican infielder Angel Genao delivered a memorable first Major League performance, collecting four hits and driving in a run for the Cleveland Guardians, although the New York Mets rallied for a 6-5 victory in 10 innings.
Angel Genao made an immediate impact in his first Major League Baseball game, becoming the first player in the 125-year history of the Cleveland Guardians franchise to record at least four hits in his debut.
The 22-year-old Dominican prospect finished 4-for-5 with four singles and one RBI on Wednesday night, but his historic performance was overshadowed by a late comeback as the New York Mets defeated Cleveland 6-5 in 10 innings.
A Record-Breaking Introduction to the Major Leagues
Genao gave Cleveland a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when he lined an RBI single to left field off reliever Dedniel Núñez, bringing home Ángel Martínez. The advantage proved short-lived, however, as the Mets tied the game with two outs in the ninth against All-Star closer Cade Smith before winning in extra innings on an RBI from Bo Bichette.
Despite the loss, Genao’s offensive debut placed him in exclusive company. He became the 22nd Major League player since 1900 to collect at least four hits in his first big league game and only the second to do so this season. Kevin McGonigle accomplished the same feat for Detroit on Opening Day against San Diego.
Grateful for the Opportunity
Speaking through translator and coach Agustín Rivero, Genao said the night exceeded his expectations despite the disappointing result.
“It was much more than I could have imagined,” Genao said. “Obviously, the only thing missing was getting the win for the team, but I’m grateful for this opportunity. I just tried to enjoy the game and every at-bat.”
Primarily a shortstop, Genao started at third base while batting ninth in the lineup during the second game of the series. Cleveland rested star third baseman José Ramírez for a second consecutive game because of inflammation in his left wrist, although Ramírez later entered as a pinch runner in the 10th inning.
Defensive Mistakes Could Not Overshadow Offensive Success
Genao’s debut was not flawless. In the fourth inning, he committed two errors on the same play after failing to handle a ground ball hit by Carson Benge and then making an errant throw past first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. The ball rolled into the camera well near the dugout, allowing the Mets to score an unearned run.
The young infielder said he quickly shifted his focus after the mistake, emphasizing the importance of moving on during a Major League game and staying prepared for the next opportunity.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt expressed confidence in Genao’s future, praising both his versatility and energy. Vogt said the switch-hitting infielder is capable of contributing at third base, shortstop and second base, adding that the organization looks forward to watching his development at the Major League level.
Although Cleveland was unable to secure the victory, Genao’s remarkable debut offered an early glimpse of why he is regarded as one of the franchise’s top young talents and provided an encouraging start to his Major League career.
