The Dominican Republic men’s rugby sevens team kept its medal hopes alive at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 after defeating Bermuda 20-14 in the quarterfinals at Parque del Este.
The victory sends the Dominican side, known as the “Taínos,” into the semifinals, where they are scheduled to face Colombia at 10:56 a.m. on Monday. A win would secure the host nation a place in the tournament final.
Late Try Seals Dominican Victory
The match remained closely contested until the closing minutes, with the Dominican Republic holding a narrow 15-14 advantage. The hosts then broke through Bermuda’s defense with a decisive try that extended the lead to 20-14 before their defense successfully denied the visitors any chance of a late comeback.
The Dominican team scored four tries, worth five points each, while Bermuda crossed the line twice and added two successful conversions.
Ulloa Leads the Dominican Attack
Félix Ulloa led the Dominican offense with 10 points, while Julio Tonnabel and Luis David Álvarez each contributed five points.
For Bermuda, Hadleigh Tucker finished with nine points, and Aiden Kendall added five.
Women’s Team Eliminated
In the women’s rugby sevens competition, the Dominican Republic was eliminated after a 31-5 defeat to Mexico during the knockout stage.
The men’s team will now attempt to continue its tournament run against Colombia, with a place in the gold medal match at stake in front of the home crowd in Santo Domingo.
