Jonni Suriel Throws No-Hitter as Dominican Republic Blanks Colombia

Jonni Suriel etched his name into the early highlights of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games after pitching a complete-game no-hitter to guide the Dominican Republic to a dominant mercy-rule win over Colombia in the men’s softball tournament.

Playing at Softball Stadium No. 1 inside the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo, Suriel silenced the Colombian lineup from start to finish, allowing no hits or runs while anchoring one of the tournament’s most impressive pitching performances.

Dominican Offense Takes Control Early

The home team wasted little time putting the game out of reach. The Dominican Republic erupted for six runs in the opening inning, immediately seizing control and leaving Colombia unable to recover.

The offense added the decisive run in the bottom of the fourth inning to activate the mercy rule, completing the victory while capping Suriel’s historic outing. Colombia’s Luis Amaya was charged with the loss after failing to record an out in the first inning.

Balanced Attack Supports Historic Pitching Performance

Suriel received plenty of offensive backing from Joel de la Cruz Mota, José Rosario, Jendry Torres, Elías Valerio, and Michell Rodríguez, who led a productive Dominican lineup throughout the contest.

The victory improved the Dominican Republic’s record to 1-1 in the preliminary round-robin stage. Under the tournament format, the top two teams advance to the gold medal game, while the third- and fourth-place finishers compete for bronze.

Tournament Standings and Next Matchup

After two days of competition, Venezuela leads the standings at 2-0, followed by Mexico (2-1). The Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Panama each hold 1-1 records, while Cuba stands at 1-2 and Guatemala remains winless at 0-2.

The Dominican team returns to action on Wednesday night when it faces Mexico in an important matchup that could significantly influence the race for a place in the championship game.
