Dominican Republic Completes Comeback Win Over Nicaragua
The Dominican Republic rallied from a second-half deficit to beat Nicaragua 2-1 in Managua, scoring twice within 13 minutes through Heinz Mörschel and Lucas Bretón.
The Dominican Republic overcame Nicaragua 2-1 in Managua on Sunday, extending its winning run in Group A of the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League. The home side took the lead early in the second half, but the Dominican team responded with two goals in a 13-minute span to turn the match around.
After a scoreless first half at Estadio Nacional in Managua, Nicaragua broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Jaime Moreno found the net. The goal gave the hosts the advantage, but the lead lasted only five minutes before the Dominican Republic restored parity.
Mörschel Quickly Restores the Balance
Heinz Mörschel converted from the penalty spot in the 58th minute to make it 1-1. The midfielder’s response came shortly after Nicaragua had moved ahead and kept the Dominican Republic in control of a match that had opened up considerably after halftime.
The equalizer continued Mörschel’s importance to the Dominican attack during the current Nations League campaign. He had also scored in the team’s opening 3-2 victory over Nicaragua in Santiago de los Caballeros, a match the Dominican Republic won with a stoppage-time goal from Pablo Rosario.
Bretón Completes the Turnaround
The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute. Lucas Bretón, who entered at halftime for Juan Familia-Castillo, scored with a left-footed strike from outside the area to put the Dominican Republic ahead 2-1. His goal completed a comeback that had begun when Nicaragua appeared to have seized control of the match.
From 1-0 down in the 53rd minute to 2-1 ahead in the 66th, the Dominican Republic turned the match in just 13 minutes. The team then protected its advantage through the closing stages to secure another three points on the road.
Dominican Republic Builds Momentum in Group A
The victory was the Dominican Republic’s third in four Group A matches. The team had previously beaten Nicaragua 3-2 in Santiago and Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 in Port of Spain, with those results establishing it as one of the Caribbean sides competing for the top positions in League A.
The 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League serves as a qualification pathway for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup. In League A, the top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, while the third- and fourth-place teams qualify for the Gold Cup preliminaries.
Following the win in Managua, the Dominican Republic moved to nine points from three victories in four matches. Curaçao and Haiti also reached nine points in Group A, leaving the final positions to be determined by the competition’s standings and tiebreakers as the group stage reaches its conclusion.
For the Dominican side, the victory also completed a second win over Nicaragua in the same Nations League group. The first meeting ended 3-2 in Santiago, while the return match followed a different pattern: Nicaragua led after halftime, but Mörschel and Bretón produced the goals that gave the Dominican Republic another comeback victory.
