Ezequiel Durán’s Versatility Makes Him a Vital Piece for the Texas Rangers
Dominican infielder Ezequiel Durán has turned defensive versatility into one of the Texas Rangers' greatest strengths, combining the ability to play nearly every position on the field with the best offensive production of his Major League career.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Few players have embraced the utility role as effectively as Ezequiel Durán, whose ability to contribute across the diamond has made him one of the most valuable pieces on the Texas Rangers’ roster during the club’s push for a postseason berth.
The Dominican player has become known inside the organization as “The Solution,” a nickname that began as a joke while playing winter baseball in the Dominican Republic after he appeared at three different positions in three consecutive innings. What started as a lighthearted label has evolved into an accurate description of his value in Texas.
A Defensive Asset Across the Field
Durán has started games at six different positions this season, demonstrating exceptional flexibility. He has made 44 starts at shortstop, 20 at third base, another 20 at second base, one at first base, and seven each in left and right field.
His adaptability extends beyond starting assignments. In 23 games he has played multiple defensive positions, while 13 of those appearances included time both in the infield and the outfield. That versatility has allowed the Rangers to navigate injuries to key players such as Corey Seager and Josh Jung without significantly disrupting the lineup.
Durán has also shown a willingness to expand his skill set even further. During spring training he practiced as a catcher, and last season he even contributed on the mound, retiring 10 of the 11 batters he faced over four relief appearances.
Career-Best Production at the Plate
His impact has not been limited to defense. Durán is batting .276 with 13 home runs and a career-high 63 RBIs, providing consistent offensive production while filling whatever role the club requires.
One of his biggest moments came when Texas snapped a six-game losing streak. Durán drove in four runs and delivered the game-winning hit in a dramatic 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants, highlighting his ability to produce in key situations.
Recognition From Teammates and Coaches
His teammates and coaching staff have openly praised the value he brings to the roster. Starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi said the Rangers’ season would look “very different” without Durán and the way he has consistently responded whenever the team needed him.
Manager Skip Schumaker echoed that sentiment, saying the nickname “The Solution” is no longer just a joke but an accurate reflection of Durán’s contributions throughout the season.
Acquired from the New York Yankees in the 2021 trade that sent Joey Gallo to New York, Durán reached the majors with Texas in 2022 and played an important utility role during the Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship campaign. As the club continues its playoff race, his combination of defensive flexibility, offensive consistency and team-first mentality has made him one of the organization’s most dependable players.
