Gerrit Cole Reaches 1,000 Strikeouts With Yankees
Gerrit Cole reached 1,000 strikeouts with the New York Yankees on Saturday, becoming the fastest pitcher in franchise history to reach the milestone as New York defeated the Atlanta Braves 5-4 at Yankee Stadium.
Gerrit Cole reached a milestone Saturday that places him in a distinctive part of New York Yankees history, recording his 1,000th strikeout with the franchise during a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium.
The right-hander reached the mark in his 139th game and after 837 2/3 innings with New York, making him the fastest pitcher to accumulate 1,000 strikeouts in the history of the Yankees. Cole finished the afternoon with nine strikeouts over seven innings, taking his Yankees total to 1,002.
Cole Reaches the Milestone Against Atlanta
The historic strikeout came in the fifth inning, when Cole threw a 98.8 mph four-seam fastball past Braves first baseman Matt Olson to end the inning. The sequence capped a performance in which Cole allowed six hits and two runs while continuing to establish the fastball and breaking pitches that have defined his career.
Atlanta did damage against Cole during the same fifth inning, putting together four consecutive hits. A run-scoring double by Mike Yastrzemski and an RBI single by Jim Jarvis accounted for the Braves’ two runs against the Yankees starter.
Despite that stretch, Cole completed seven innings and kept New York in position to secure the win. His nine strikeouts also underscored the importance of the milestone within a broader return to the major leagues following elbow surgery.
A Significant Mark After Tommy John Surgery
The achievement comes during Cole’s first season back with the Yankees after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Saturday marked his 14th start since returning to Major League Baseball, giving the veteran another opportunity to build momentum after a lengthy rehabilitation.
His recent results have been particularly strong. Over his previous five starts, Cole had a 2.27 ERA, allowing eight earned runs across 31 2/3 innings. The run has added another notable chapter to his tenure in New York after he joined the Yankees in 2020.
For an international baseball audience, the 1,000-strikeout mark also provides a measure of Cole’s impact in New York. Reaching the figure in fewer games and innings than any previous Yankees pitcher highlights the pace at which he accumulated strikeouts during his time with the club.
Yankees Offense Provides Enough Support
New York’s offense complemented Cole’s performance with contributions from several young players. Spencer Jones drove in two runs against Braves starter Chris Sale, producing an RBI single in the second inning before adding a run-scoring triple in the fifth.
Rookie George Lombard Jr. also continued his promising start by hitting his second professional home run in just four games. His solo shot in the seventh inning traveled to the opposite field and extended New York’s lead.
Ben Rice later provided an insurance run with a solo home run to center field in the eighth. Statcast projected the drive at 431 feet, marking Rice’s first home run since July 27.
The combination of Cole’s seven-inning outing and timely power allowed the Yankees to hold off Atlanta 5-4, while the veteran right-hander left the game having added both a personal milestone and another strong performance to his return season.
