Kyle Schwarber Caps Phillies’ Stunning Ninth-Inning Comeback

Philadelphia appeared headed for defeat until the final three outs. Down 4-0 in the ninth inning at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies erupted for six runs and completed one of their most dramatic comebacks of the season, capped by Kyle Schwarber’s two-run home run for a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The victory extended Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine games and moved the Phillies to 73-58, leaving them three games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Cardinals fell to 66-66 and were swept in the three-game series.

Sosa And De La Cruz Set The Stage

The comeback began with Bryce Harper’s leadoff double, but Philadelphia appeared to have run out of opportunities after closer Riley O’Brien retired the next two batters. J.T. Realmuto then singled with two strikes, and Justin Crawford drew a walk to load the bases.

That brought Edmundo Sosa to the plate. The Panamanian infielder delivered a three-run double with two outs and two strikes, cutting St. Louis’ lead to 4-3. Dominican outfielder Brayan De La Cruz followed with a run-scoring single to tie the game, bringing Schwarber to the plate.

Schwarber did not waste the opportunity. With two outs, he crushed a 98-mph sinker from O’Brien and sent it an estimated 459 feet, clearing the batter’s eye and landing in Ashburn Alley. It was his 39th home run of the season and gave Philadelphia its first lead of the afternoon on the final swing of the game.

The blast was tied for the fifth-longest walk-off home run in Major League Baseball since 2015. It also ended the Phillies’ drought without a walk-off homer, which had stretched back to June 2023, when Schwarber also provided the decisive home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Phillies Rally After Eight Quiet Innings

For most of the afternoon, Philadelphia’s offense had struggled to generate momentum. Starting pitcher Cristopher Sánchez allowed runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, while Kyle Leahy and the Cardinals’ bullpen held the Phillies to four hits through the first eight innings.

Sánchez completed 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs while striking out seven. He left without a decision after Philadelphia’s offense finally overturned the deficit in the ninth.

Remarkably, all six of Philadelphia’s runs came after two outs. Sosa drove in three, Schwarber supplied two and De La Cruz added one, turning what had looked like a routine Cardinals victory into a six-run collapse in the final inning.

A Milestone Victory For Philadelphia

The comeback added several milestones to a remarkable stretch for the Phillies. Philadelphia had not swept three consecutive series since September 2022 and had not overcome a four-run deficit in the ninth inning since August 2019.

The nine-game winning streak has also significantly tightened the National League East race. The Braves’ lead has been reduced to three games, putting Philadelphia firmly within striking distance as the regular season enters its final weeks.

Sosa finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while De La Cruz went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and one RBI. Their contributions were central to a ninth inning that transformed the game before Schwarber delivered its defining moment.

For St. Louis, José Fermín went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI, while Joshua Báez went hitless. The Cardinals had controlled the game for eight innings before Philadelphia’s late surge produced a result that underscored one of baseball’s oldest realities: the outcome remains unsettled until the final out.
