Argentina kept its World Cup title defense alive with a dramatic 2-1 victory over England, overturning a second-half deficit with two late goals to secure a place in the tournament final.
Playing before a packed crowd at Atlanta Stadium, the defending champions appeared headed for elimination after England took the lead early in the second half. However, Argentina’s persistence paid off as Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback in stoppage time with a header from a cross delivered by Lionel Messi.
England Strikes First
The opening half was a cautious tactical battle, with both teams limiting clear scoring opportunities. Argentina controlled possession for long stretches, while England remained compact defensively and looked to threaten through quick counterattacks.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished one of England’s few clear chances to give his side a 1-0 advantage and put the Three Lions within touching distance of their first World Cup final since 1966.
Argentina Takes Control
After falling behind, Argentina increased the pressure as England dropped deeper to defend its lead. The defending champions dominated possession around the penalty area, with Messi becoming increasingly influential between the lines as he orchestrated the attack.
The equalizer arrived five minutes from full time. Following a short corner routine, Fernández collected the ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot that beat the England goalkeeper to make it 1-1 and completely change the momentum of the match.
Lautaro Delivers the Decisive Goal
Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Argentina produced one final attack. In stoppage time, Messi delivered a precise cross into the box, where Martínez timed his run perfectly to head home the winning goal and send Argentina into celebration.
The dramatic finish completed another comeback by the reigning world champions and left England unable to respond after defending its narrow advantage for much of the second half.
Spain Awaits in the Final
Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final after the Spanish side defeated France 2-0 in the other semifinal. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at New York–New Jersey Stadium.
England will meet France on Saturday, July 18, in the third-place playoff.
