Nissan’s Qashqai e-POWER has established a new Guinness World Records mark after completing a 1,980-kilometer journey across Colombia without external charging or refueling. The achievement places the automaker’s extended-range hybrid technology in the spotlight as manufacturers seek to combine electric driving characteristics with the practicality of a gasoline fuel system.

The record-setting drive took place from July 14 to 17, 2026, following a route from Bogotá to Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The journey exposed the SUV to changing elevations, urban traffic, open roads and varying weather conditions, providing a demanding real-world setting for the vehicle’s powertrain.

A 1,980-Kilometer Journey Across Colombia

The route was monitored throughout the attempt, with Guinness World Records judges overseeing the process and validating the result. According to the information provided by Nissan, the Qashqai completed the entire journey using a single tank of fuel and without relying on external charging infrastructure.

The Colombian achievement follows previous long-distance demonstrations of Nissan’s e-POWER technology in markets including the United Kingdom and Tasmania. Together, the challenges have been used by the automaker to demonstrate the system’s approach to electric propulsion without requiring drivers to plug the vehicle into a charger.

How Nissan e-POWER Works

Unlike a conventional hybrid configuration in which a gasoline engine can directly drive the wheels, e-POWER uses an electric motor to propel the vehicle. The gasoline engine functions as a generator, producing electricity when required by the system.

This configuration is designed to provide the immediate response and smooth acceleration associated with an electric vehicle while retaining the ability to refuel with gasoline. For drivers, that means the vehicle does not depend on access to external charging stations for its operation.

The latest-generation system uses a modular 5-in-1 configuration that integrates the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser into a compact powertrain. Regenerative braking also recovers energy during deceleration, helping the system manage energy use during driving.

Nissan Expands Its Electrification Strategy

For Nissan, the record is part of the broader expansion of e-POWER across international markets. The technology is positioned between conventional gasoline propulsion and fully electric vehicles, offering an alternative for drivers who want electric-motor propulsion without depending on charging infrastructure.

Richard Candler, a Nissan corporate executive, said the record demonstrates the capabilities of the latest generation of e-POWER, highlighting its efficiency, refinement and electric-vehicle-style driving experience.

The Qashqai e-POWER’s Colombian journey therefore serves as a demonstration of how extended-range electrification can be applied beyond controlled testing environments. Its 1,980-kilometer distance also illustrates the potential appeal of a system designed to preserve the familiar refueling model while changing how the vehicle is propelled.
