The Dominican Republic established a new record for electricity demand after the national power system supplied an instantaneous load of 4,195.26 megawatts (MW) at 9:32 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos.
The latest milestone surpassed the previous record of 4,185.11 MW, which had been set just one day earlier, highlighting the sustained growth in electricity consumption across the country.
Power Demand Continues to Rise
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Santos said the national electricity system successfully met the record demand and indicated that consumption is expected to continue increasing in the coming days.
“Last night at 9:32 p.m., for the second consecutive day, we exceeded the highest satisfied electricity demand in history, reaching 4,195.26 MW of instantaneous power. We believe demand will continue growing over the next few days,” the minister wrote.
The new record represents an increase of 10.15 MW compared with the previous all-time high recorded just 24 hours earlier.
Heat and Economic Growth Drive Consumption
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the increase in electricity demand reflects a combination of high seasonal temperatures, expanding economic activity, and the continued electrification of households, businesses, and industrial operations.
Greater use of air conditioning and other electrical equipment during the summer months has also contributed to the sustained rise in energy consumption nationwide.
System Meets Record Demand
Despite the unprecedented level of electricity usage, authorities confirmed that the national power system was able to satisfy the full demand without interruption. Officials will continue monitoring consumption trends as forecasts indicate electricity use may remain elevated during the coming days.
