La Cantera Opens New Space for Dominican Emerging Artists

Centro Cultural Rainieri has launched La Cantera, a new temporary exhibition space created to give emerging Dominican artists a more accessible platform while encouraging the development of a new generation of art collectors.

Located beside the center’s auditorium, the approximately 35-square-meter gallery is designed to reduce the production and installation demands typically associated with large exhibitions. The initiative allows artists at the beginning of their careers to focus more directly on developing and presenting their work.

A Smaller Space Designed for Emerging Artists

La Cantera complements the Centro Cultural Rainieri’s main temporary exhibition hall, which covers more than 400 square meters. For artists who are still establishing themselves, the scale of that larger space can create significant logistical and production challenges.

The new venue is intended to provide a more manageable setting for artists with distinctive approaches and emerging bodies of work. The center also sees the project as a way to connect artistic development with the growth of local collecting, creating opportunities for visitors to encounter new artists while beginning their own relationship with Dominican art.

The long-term ambition is for La Cantera to become a place associated with the early careers of artists who eventually gain wider recognition in the Dominican art scene. At the same time, the center hopes the space will serve as a first point of entry for future collectors purchasing their first work by a Dominican artist.

‘Visiones de Yauya’ Opens the Program

The first exhibition presented at La Cantera is Visiones de Yauya, a project by writer and interdisciplinary artist José Carlos Nazario. The exhibition opened June 10 with a panel discussion focused on Nazario’s creative process and will remain on view until mid-September.

The series grew out of Nazario’s personal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the landscapes of the Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve in Punta Cana became a place for contemplation and creative exploration. Through repeated visits to the reserve’s springs, the artist developed a visual investigation combining memory, observation and imagination.

The exhibition consists of four large-scale works created with ink, watercolor, acrylic and washes made with turmeric and coffee on paper. Rather than reproducing the landscape literally, the works reinterpret the environment through an intuitive process influenced by surrealist automatism, allowing the images to develop organically as the artist works.

Reimagining Punta Cana Through Art

Visiones de Yauya offers a perspective on Punta Cana that moves beyond the destination’s familiar association with beaches and resort tourism. Nazario instead approaches the landscape as a source of artistic inspiration, using nature and memory to construct imagined environments.

The result brings together elements of landscape, personal experience and abstraction, inviting viewers to consider a destination widely recognized for tourism from a different cultural and visual perspective. The exhibition also connects the natural surroundings of Punta Cana with contemporary artistic creation, expanding the ways in which the region can be interpreted.

Through La Cantera, Centro Cultural Rainieri is seeking to strengthen its role in the Dominican cultural ecosystem by supporting emerging creators, creating new opportunities for audiences and encouraging the relationship between artistic production and collecting.
