Dominican Republic Issues Green Weather Alert For Three Areas

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed Santo Domingo, Monte Plata and the National District under green alert Tuesday because of unstable weather associated with a trough in the middle and upper levels of the troposphere.

The alert is based on the potential for urban flooding as the weather system continues to create conditions favorable for cloud development, moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and occasional wind gusts.

Rain And Thunderstorms Expected

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) said in a 1 p.m. weather bulletin that the trough would continue influencing atmospheric conditions in the affected areas. The forecast calls for periods of cloudiness accompanied by moderate showers, electrical storms and intermittent gusty winds.

Because the main concern identified by the COE is flooding in urban areas, residents and visitors in the affected locations are being urged to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in places that are prone to rapid water accumulation.

COE Issues Safety Recommendations

Under the green alert, the COE advises the public to monitor official weather and emergency bulletins and review family emergency plans and emergency backpacks. People are also urged to avoid crossing rivers, streams, ravines and other vulnerable areas while conditions remain unstable.

The agency encouraged residents to stay informed through its official communication channels and reminded the public that the 9-1-1 emergency system should be contacted if an emergency situation occurs.

The alert applies to Santo Domingo, Monte Plata and the National District while the trough continues to influence weather conditions. Further changes will depend on subsequent meteorological assessments and official bulletins.
