Dominican Republic Plans New MLB-Standard Baseball Stadium

The Dominican government is proposing a new MLB-standard baseball stadium at the current site of Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo, under legislation submitted to the National Congress. The facility would be designed to host official Major League Baseball games, as well as other sports and international events.

The stadium would form part of a wider urban and real estate redevelopment plan for Ensanche La Fe, an established area of the capital’s National District. The proposal combines sports infrastructure with new public spaces, internal roads, green areas and a self-sustaining real estate complex.

A Mixed-Capital Corporation Would Manage the Project

The legislation calls for the creation of the Corporación Inmobiliaria para la Transformación del Ensanche La Fe (Citelf), a mixed-capital commercial company involving the Dominican state and private investors. The structure is intended to combine public assets with private financing and technical expertise for the redevelopment.

Under the proposal, the state and the Banco de Desarrollo y Exportaciones (Bandex) could contribute properties they own within the designated area in exchange for shares equivalent to the appraised value of those assets. The valuations would be determined through formal property appraisals.

A private strategic partner would be selected through a competitive and transparent process. The investor would have to demonstrate the financial and technical capacity to design and build the stadium according to MLB requirements while also providing the liquid resources needed to carry out the works.

Existing Sports Facilities Would Be Part of the Redevelopment

The proposed development extends beyond baseball. It also includes the renovation of the Coliseo de Boxeo Carlos “Teo” Cruz and the creation of a broader complex intended to generate enough activity and revenue to support its own operation.

The new sports facilities would remain state property, while Citelf would be responsible for their administration and management with the participation of private investors and operators. One-third of the company’s board members would be proposed by the public sector.

The management structure would also have to account for the country’s professional baseball calendar. Once Citelf assumes control, it would be required to address the needs of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (Lidom) and the teams that use the stadium during the professional season. A framework agreement is envisioned to establish the conditions for use and maintenance of the facility.

Proposal Follows Government Feasibility Review

The initiative follows recommendations from a consultative commission created by presidential decree in June 2025 to examine the feasibility of building a stadium on state-owned land in Ensanche La Fe that could meet Major League Baseball requirements.

The proposal therefore links the stadium project to a larger transformation of one of Santo Domingo’s established urban districts rather than treating the sports facility as an isolated construction project. Its final scope, financing structure and implementation would depend on the legislative process and the subsequent selection of private partners.

Baseball occupies a central place in Dominican sports and has produced a long list of players who have reached the highest levels of professional baseball in the United States. The country has five members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown: Juan Marichal, Pedro Martínez, Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz and Adrián Beltré. Dominican teams have also won the Caribbean Series 23 times.

If approved and ultimately developed as proposed, the new stadium would give Santo Domingo a facility intended to meet MLB standards while serving the domestic professional baseball season and other international events. The project would also make the redevelopment of Ensanche La Fe one of the government’s proposed major urban and sports infrastructure initiatives.
