Dominican Republic Reaches Top 50 Globally for Mobile Internet Speed
The Dominican Republic has climbed to 41st place in the global ranking for mobile internet performance, reinforcing its position as one of Latin America's strongest mobile connectivity markets, although expanding fiber-optic networks remains a priority for improving nationwide broadband access.
The Dominican Republic has positioned itself among the world’s leading countries for mobile internet performance, ranking 41st globally in the latest Global Speedtest Index by Ookla. The result highlights the country’s progress in mobile connectivity, driven by continued investments in fourth- and fifth-generation mobile networks.
According to an analysis by the National Observatory of Information and Communication Technologies (ONTIC-RD), the country recorded an average mobile download speed of 121.59 Mbps, placing it among the best-performing mobile networks in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Fiber Optics Remain the Next Challenge
Despite the strong performance of mobile services, experts say the continued expansion of fiber-optic broadband is essential to provide high-capacity, reliable internet access across the country. Fixed broadband infrastructure remains a critical component for supporting households, businesses, schools, and the growing demand for digital services.
Broadening fiber-optic coverage would help strengthen connectivity in underserved areas while improving network capacity as demand for remote work, online education, telemedicine, e-commerce, and digital government services continues to increase.
Digital Competitiveness
The country’s mobile connectivity gains are viewed as a competitive advantage that supports economic development and digital transformation. Continued investment in fixed broadband infrastructure is expected to complement these achievements, helping ensure that high-speed internet becomes more widely available throughout the Dominican Republic.
