Dominican Republic and ITF Partner to Strengthen Tourist Transportation
The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Tourism has signed a cooperation agreement with the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) to improve safety, service quality, innovation, and sustainability in transportation services that support the country's tourism industry.
SANTO DOMINGO — Tourism Minister David Collado signed a memorandum of cooperation on Wednesday with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) aimed at enhancing tourist mobility across the Dominican Republic through technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the adoption of international best practices.
The agreement was signed alongside Stephen Cotton, the ITF’s General Secretary, during the meeting of the Caribbean National Coordination Committee (NCC) held in Punta Cana, one of the country’s leading tourism destinations.
Improving Transportation Standards for Tourism
The partnership focuses on strengthening the quality of land transportation services that support the tourism sector, one of the Dominican Republic’s most important economic drivers. Planned initiatives include technical cooperation designed to improve safety, service quality, innovation, and sustainability across the sector.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, these efforts are intended to build a transportation system that is safer, more efficient, and more competitive, reinforcing the role of ground transportation as a key component of the country’s tourism industry.
Professional Development for Transport Workers
During the signing ceremony, Collado emphasized the importance of transportation professionals in shaping visitors’ experiences from the moment they arrive until they depart.
“When we strengthen our transport workers, we strengthen the entire tourism experience of the Dominican Republic. They are the first welcome and, in many cases, the last memory visitors take home from our country,” Collado said.
He added that the agreement will help continue the professionalization of the sector by incorporating international standards and expanding training opportunities for transportation workers.
Recognition for Sustainable Tourism Leadership
During the event, the ITF presented Collado with a recognition for his leadership in promoting sustainable tourism and encouraging collaboration between the tourism and transportation sectors.
Accepting the distinction, the minister dedicated the recognition to the country’s transportation workers, highlighting their professionalism and hospitality as key factors in creating positive experiences for the millions of tourists who visit the Dominican Republic each year.
