Banco Popular Dominicano has been honored with three awards at the AI in Finance Awards 2026, presented by the international publication Global Finance, in recognition of its responsible application of artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and data integration to improve customer service and financial decision-making.

The bank was named the Best Bank in the Dominican Republic for Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Banking. It also received regional and national honors in the categories of Best AI-Enhanced Customer Experience and Best Personalized Financial Advice, highlighting its leadership in applying AI to retail banking services.

AI-Driven Decision Intelligence

According to the evaluation conducted by the awards panel, Banco Popular stood out for integrating data, advanced analytics, machine learning models, and business rules into a corporate decision intelligence framework. This approach enables the institution to deliver more relevant recommendations throughout the customer relationship while supporting more informed financial decisions.

The judges also recognized the bank’s ability to provide a more proactive and personalized customer experience through an advisory model focused on clients’ needs. Its governance framework for artificial intelligence, along with measurable improvements in customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and business performance, were cited as key strengths.

The evaluation further highlighted the institution’s emphasis on explainable recommendations, mechanisms to prevent excessive or poorly timed customer interactions, and safeguards including monitoring, auditability, privacy protection, and human oversight.

Artificial Intelligence Centered on People

In a recent article, Christopher Paniagua, Chief Executive Officer of Banco Popular, said the greatest challenge of artificial intelligence in banking is not purely technological but human. He argued that its long-term value depends on workforce preparation, leadership, and organizational culture.

According to Paniagua, artificial intelligence should enhance employees’ ability to generate value rather than replace them. He said AI strengthens professional judgment by providing broader customer insights and better information, helping financial institutions build more relevant and personalized relationships with their clients.

The executive added that Banco Popular integrates AI into its corporate strategy with human supervision, risk management, regulatory compliance, and clearly defined performance evaluation standards, ensuring that technological innovation remains aligned with responsible banking practices.

Recognition for Responsible Innovation

Banco Popular said its AI capabilities support multiple stages of the customer journey by combining data, advanced analytics, machine learning, and decision rules to deliver more consistent interactions across service channels. The approach allows the bank to prioritize recommendations more accurately, provide employees with relevant insights, and tailor financial products, services, and conditions to each customer’s profile and circumstances.

The institution noted that these initiatives contribute to improving decision quality, increasing operational efficiency, and expanding service personalization while maintaining high standards of transparency, accountability, and customer protection.

The AI in Finance Awards 2026 winners were selected from submissions evaluated by specialists from technology consulting firm CGI, with the final decisions made by the editorial team at Global Finance. Founded in 1987 and headquartered in New York, Global Finance regularly recognizes financial institutions for excellence and innovation across the global banking industry.
