Banco Popular Dominicano has climbed 17 positions in The Banker’s Top 1,000 World Banks 2026 ranking, reaching 688th place among the world’s leading banking institutions. The annual ranking, published by The Banker, part of the Financial Times Group, is one of the financial industry’s most widely recognized benchmarks for measuring bank strength.

The improvement was primarily driven by the bank’s growth in Tier 1 capital, the principal metric used by The Banker to assess the financial strength and resilience of banking institutions worldwide. The bank also attributed its stronger position to continued expansion in total assets, higher earnings, and solid levels of profitability and solvency.

Highest-Ranked Private Dominican Bank

Among privately owned Dominican financial institutions included in the 2026 edition of the ranking, Banco Popular secured the highest position. According to the bank, it finished 247 places ahead of the next privately owned Dominican institution listed, reinforcing its standing within the country’s financial sector.

The results reflect the institution’s sustained financial performance and its ability to strengthen its capital base while maintaining consistent profitability in an increasingly competitive banking environment.

Recognition of Long-Term Financial Growth

Christopher Paniagua, Banco Popular’s chief executive officer, said the latest ranking reflects the confidence of the bank’s customers and the commitment of its employees.

“This achievement demonstrates how we continue innovating and building a bank that is closer, more agile and more efficient every day,” Paniagua said. He added that the institution will continue promoting a model of innovative and responsible banking aimed at supporting the Dominican Republic’s economic, social and environmental development.

A Decade of Steady Progress

Published annually since 1970, The Banker’s Top 1,000 World Banks ranking is regarded as one of the leading international references for evaluating the financial strength of banks across the globe.

Banco Popular’s performance illustrates a sustained upward trajectory over the past decade. The institution ranked 906th globally in 2014 and has since climbed 218 positions to reach 688th in the 2026 edition.

The bank attributes this long-term progress to a strategy focused on digital transformation, financial discipline, innovation and the adoption of international best practices. These initiatives have strengthened its competitiveness and reinforced its position among the leading privately owned financial institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
