Smartfilms Dominicana has completed the 2026 edition of its Ruta Peliculera, a nationwide educational initiative that brought film workshops and discussions to 17 cities and reached approximately 2,700 people. The program focuses on teaching participants how to develop and tell stories using a cellphone as a filmmaking tool.

The 2026 tour represents a 58% increase in participation compared with the previous year, while the number of workshops and educational activities rose from 22 in the first edition to 36 this year. The expansion places training at the center of Smartfilms Dominicana’s efforts to broaden access to audiovisual knowledge beyond the country’s main cultural and educational hubs.

A Nationwide Approach To Film Education

With support from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), the Ruta Peliculera traveled through Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Cristóbal, Higüey, La Romana, Puerto Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, La Vega, Moca, Nagua, Bonao, Cotuí, Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, Sánchez, Boca Chica and Villa Altagracia.

The activities were hosted by educational, cultural and community institutions, including UNIBE, INTEC, ITLA, APEC, PUCMM, INFOTEP, the Cinemateca Dominicana, Chavón, RTVD, the Mauricio Báez School, the Juan Pablo Duarte School and Megacentro. The geographic reach allowed the initiative to connect audiovisual training with students, aspiring creators and communities outside Santo Domingo.

For international readers, the scale of the program is significant because filmmaking education is often concentrated in specialized institutions and major urban centers. By taking workshops directly to different communities, the initiative seeks to reduce some of the barriers that can prevent emerging creators from gaining access to practical knowledge about storytelling and audiovisual production.

Cellphones As Entry Points Into Filmmaking

The program is built around the idea that a smartphone can serve as an accessible starting point for filmmaking. Rather than requiring participants to begin with professional cameras or specialized production equipment, the workshops introduce ways to use a device many people already carry to develop and produce stories.

Evelyna Rodríguez and Danilo Reynoso, the directors of Smartfilms Dominicana, said the growth of the Ruta Peliculera reflects increased interest among Dominicans in learning, creating and telling their own stories. They also said the initiative will continue seeking opportunities to bring film education to more communities.

The emphasis on mobile filmmaking also connects cultural creation with accessible technology. For students and aspiring filmmakers, the approach can provide an entry point into audiovisual production without requiring access to a traditional film set or extensive technical infrastructure.

Smartfilms Moves Into The Next Stage

The completion of the Ruta Peliculera marks the end of one phase of Smartfilms Dominicana’s second edition, but not the end of the 2026 program. The initiative is now moving toward its next stage while maintaining its focus on audiovisual education, wider access to filmmaking knowledge and opportunities for emerging talent.

By combining training with a nationwide presence, Smartfilms Dominicana is positioning mobile filmmaking as a practical way for people in different parts of the country to participate in the Dominican Republic’s growing audiovisual culture. The 2026 tour’s 36 activities and approximately 2,700 participants provide a larger platform for that effort than the initiative’s first edition.
