Dominican Senate Welcomes Children for Educational Tour of Congress
A group of 57 children participating in the Dominican Ministry of Labor's "Convivencia Educativa" program visited the Senate of the Republic, where they learned how the country's legislative branch operates through a guided tour of the National Congress.
SANTO DOMINGO — The Senate of the Dominican Republic welcomed 57 children enrolled in the Ministry of Labor’s Convivencia Educativa program for a guided visit designed to introduce them to the country’s legislative institutions and encourage civic education from an early age.
The experience began at the front plaza of the National Congress building, where staff from the Senate’s Division of Citizen and Political Participation greeted the group before leading them through some of the institution’s most significant areas. The initiative forms part of the Senate’s ongoing guided visits program, which allows students, organizations, and members of the public to learn more about the legislative branch and its role in Dominican democracy.
Learning How the Legislative Process Works
During the visit, the children toured the National Assembly Hall, the chamber used for joint sessions of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. There, they received an overview of the hall’s purpose, its institutional significance, and the ceremonies and constitutional functions carried out within the space.
The group also visited the Senate Chamber, where they observed proceedings from the public gallery while learning about the Senate’s organizational structure, its responsibilities, and the process through which legislation is debated and approved in the Dominican Republic.
Exploring the Senate’s Historical Heritage
Another stop on the tour was the Juan Pablo Duarte Bicameral Library, which preserves historical parliamentary records and serves as a center for research and reading. Senate officials explained the library’s role in safeguarding the country’s legislative history while promoting education and access to knowledge.
During the activity, Nelson Guzmán, the Senate’s chief of staff, and Leonardo Javier, director of Senate Representation, encouraged the children to remain committed to their education and pursue careers that contribute to the Dominican Republic’s future development.
Educational Program Promotes Civic Engagement
The visiting delegation was accompanied by a technical team from the Ministry of Labor, including Austria Gelin Feliz, head of labor welfare; analyst Milagros Vicente; human resources administrative technician Perla Hernández; and intern Fátima Acevedo.
The Convivencia Educativa program seeks to promote positive social interaction and educational experiences for the children of Ministry of Labor employees. Meanwhile, the Senate’s Guided Visits program remains open to schools, institutions, and citizens interested in learning more about the Dominican Republic’s legislative branch through scheduled visits requested via the Senate’s official website.
