Dominican Republic Launches First Fully Online ISSN Application System
The National Library Pedro Henríquez Ureña has introduced a fully automated online platform that allows publishers to apply for an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), streamlining the registration process for serial publications across the Dominican Republic.
SANTO DOMINGO — The National Library Pedro Henríquez Ureña (BNPHU) has launched a fully automated system for requesting an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), allowing publishers to complete the application process online without visiting the institution in person.
The new platform enables users to apply for an ISSN from their home or office through the BNPHU website, reducing processing time while eliminating the need for unnecessary travel. The ISSN is the internationally recognized identifier assigned to serial publications, including magazines, newspapers, journals, bulletins, and other continuing resources.
Digital Service Designed to Simplify Registration
The online system was officially introduced during an event held in the Aída Cartagena Portalatín Hall at the BNPHU. The launch was led by Greivis Cristina Asencio, head of the Dominican ISBN and ISSN Agency.
According to Asencio, the Dominican ISBN and ISSN Agency provides the certification free of charge. She explained that the new digital platform is expected to accelerate the application process while offering applicants priority guidance throughout the registration procedure and the international validation process.
Benefits for Digital and Print Publications
Asencio noted that obtaining an ISSN gives digital newspapers and other serial publications internationally recognized identification, helping strengthen credibility with readers, advertisers, and official institutions.
She also highlighted that an ISSN improves a publication’s visibility in international databases, library catalogs, and digital archives. In addition, she said the identifier is considered a requirement for certain partnerships with Google News, making it an important credential for publishers seeking broader distribution and recognition.
Supporting the Digital Transformation of Publishing
By moving the entire application process online, the BNPHU aims to modernize access to one of the publishing industry’s most important identification systems. The initiative is expected to make ISSN registration more accessible for publishers across the Dominican Republic while reducing administrative burdens and encouraging wider participation in internationally recognized publishing standards.
