Dominican Botanical Garden Celebrates 50 Years With Free Entry
The Dominican Botanical Garden in Santo Domingo will mark its 50th anniversary on Saturday, August 15, with free admission and a full day of educational, cultural and recreational activities for visitors.
The Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso National Botanical Garden will celebrate five decades of conservation, scientific research and environmental education in the Dominican Republic with a special open-house event on Saturday, August 15.
The anniversary program will begin at 10 a.m. and will offer free admission, giving families and other visitors an opportunity to explore the garden’s facilities while taking part in educational and recreational activities.
Bird Watching And Educational Activities
The day’s program will include bird watching and guided visits to several specialized areas, including the Medicinal Plants Pavilion, Fern Pavilion, Seed Bank and In Vitro Culture Laboratory.
Visitors will also be able to attend an educational talk and participate in painting and recycling workshops. The activities are designed to combine recreation with the garden’s broader mission of promoting knowledge and appreciation of the country’s plant biodiversity.
The garden’s train service will not operate during the anniversary event. Organizers said the decision is intended to encourage visitors to walk through the grounds and experience the natural areas on foot.
Documentary And Family Activities
At 2 p.m., the garden’s auditorium will screen a documentary about the institution’s history and its principal contributions during its 50 years of operation. The documentary will be presented in three showings.
Children will have access to face-painting activities beginning at 3 p.m., followed by a commemorative cake for visitors and collaborators.
The nursery will operate on a special schedule during the celebration. Visitors will also be able to explore the Dr. Watson Perrygo Ecological Museum, which features dioramas representing different life zones found across the Dominican Republic.
Celebration Continues Through August
Pedro Suárez, director general of the Botanical Garden, invited families to attend the anniversary activities and highlighted the institution’s work in protecting flora, supporting scientific research and promoting environmental education.
The 50th-anniversary program extends beyond Saturday’s open house. It also includes a symposium focused on plant science and conservation, specialized workshops and the presentation of a publication about Dr. Rafael María Moscoso.
A National Family Rally is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, providing another opportunity for families to participate in the anniversary program and explore the institution’s natural surroundings.
For visitors in Santo Domingo, the anniversary offers a free opportunity to experience one of the city’s major green spaces while learning about the Dominican Republic’s plant diversity and the role of botanical institutions in conservation and environmental education.
