Playa El Faro Reopens as San Pedro de Macorís Expands Tourism Appeal
A RD$67 million redevelopment of Playa El Faro has transformed one of San Pedro de Macorís' best-known coastal areas, creating new recreational facilities and strengthening the province's efforts to attract more visitors to the Dominican Republic's eastern region.
Playa El Faro in San Pedro de Macorís has officially reopened following a comprehensive redevelopment project designed to revitalize the city’s waterfront and enhance its appeal as a destination for residents, domestic travelers, and international visitors.
The renovated beach is scheduled to be inaugurated during a ceremony led by President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado, after the Ministry of Tourism completed the final phase of the project. The government invested approximately RD$67 million in the initiative.
Modern Facilities Along the Coastline
The redevelopment covers approximately 570 meters of coastline within a 12,398-square-meter area. The project introduces upgraded public infrastructure intended to improve accessibility, safety, and visitor comfort while creating a more attractive public space for the local community.
New amenities include parking areas, children’s playgrounds, a beach volleyball court, modern lighting, landscaped green spaces, urban furniture, public restrooms, stormwater drainage, sidewalks, road improvements, and a dedicated office for the Tourist Police (Politur). The project also incorporates a designated area with service facilities for local fishermen.
Part of a Broader Waterfront Transformation
The renovation complements the ongoing redevelopment of the San Pedro de Macorís waterfront (malecón), another Ministry of Tourism project backed by an investment of approximately RD$267 million. Together, the two initiatives aim to modernize the city’s coastal corridor and create a more inviting environment for recreation and tourism.
Improved public spaces along the waterfront are expected to encourage greater visitor activity while creating opportunities for restaurants, retailers, transportation providers, recreational businesses, and other tourism-related services throughout the province.
Supporting Tourism in the Eastern Dominican Republic
San Pedro de Macorís occupies a strategic location within the Dominican Republic’s eastern region, close to established tourism destinations such as Juan Dolio. Officials hope the upgraded beach will strengthen the province’s ability to attract domestic tourism while complementing the broader tourism offering available across the region.
Beyond its beaches, the province also offers historical and cultural attractions that can be incorporated into a more diversified visitor experience. The restoration of Playa El Faro adds another public asset that could help expand tourism beyond the country’s traditional resort destinations.
