New Sosúa Beach Vendors Plaza on the Dominican Republic's north coast

Dominican Republic Creates Management Committee for Sosúa Beach Vendors Plaza

The Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) has officially created the Management Committee for the Sosúa Beach Vendors Plaza, a new governing body responsible for ensuring the efficient administration, maintenance and long-term sustainability of the recently completed tourism facility in Sosúa, on the Dominican Republic’s northern coast.

The committee was formed under Decree No. 187-26 as part of the government’s strategy to safeguard the operation of the plaza, which was built to improve working conditions for beach vendors, organize commercial activity and enhance the experience of both domestic and international visitors.

Community-Based Management Model

The committee was formally introduced during a ceremony led by Patricia Mejía, Vice Minister for Destination Management at MITUR, alongside ministry officials. The event was attended by Puerto Plata Senator Ginette Bournigal and representatives from community organizations involved in the tourism development of Sosúa.

The governing body includes representatives from the Catholic Church, the Evangelical Church, the Sosúa Municipal Government, the Magua Foundation, the Sosúa Development Association and the Sosúa Beach Vendors Association. Together, these organizations will oversee the plaza’s operation through a participatory and transparent management model focused on preserving the facility and maintaining service standards.

Supporting the Redevelopment of Sosúa Beach

According to MITUR, the committee will strengthen coordination between local authorities and the community while helping ensure the infrastructure continues to operate efficiently for the benefit of vendors, residents and visitors.

The initiative forms part of the broader redevelopment of Sosúa Beach, one of the Dominican Republic’s most recognized coastal destinations. The government has promoted the project as an effort to create a more organized and sustainable tourism environment while improving the beach’s overall appearance and visitor experience.

President Luis Abinader recently inaugurated the new commercial plaza, a project built with an investment of nearly US$10 million. The development was designed to reorganize beachfront commerce and support the local tourism economy.

Modern Facilities for Vendors and Visitors

The new plaza features 79 commercial spaces, public restrooms, recreational and community areas, security systems and facilities designed specifically for beach vendors. The infrastructure is intended to improve business conditions while offering a more organized environment for the thousands of tourists who visit Sosúa each year.

MITUR said the creation of the management committee reinforces its commitment to ensuring that public investments in tourism infrastructure continue to generate economic development, employment opportunities and long-term benefits for communities across the Dominican Republic.
