Malespín Constructora is expanding beyond the Dominican Republic for the first time in its 32-year history after securing responsibility for the civil works on Panama’s new San Miguelito urban cable car project.

The approximately $255 million mobility project is being led by Austrian company Doppelmayr, which was awarded the main contract by Metro de Panamá. The Dominican company’s role covers the construction work required to support the aerial transportation system.

Six Stations and 46 Support Towers

The planned cable car will extend for approximately 6.6 kilometers and include six stations and 46 support towers. The stations will serve Balboa, Cincuentenario, Samaria, Mano de Piedra, Valle de Urracá and Torrijos Carter.

One of the project’s key features will be its connection to Panama’s Metro Line 2 at Cincuentenario station. The link is designed to integrate the cable car with the existing mass-transit network, expanding public transportation options in San Miguelito and connecting the aerial system with the city’s broader rail infrastructure.

Malespín Takes on Civil Construction Works

Malespín Constructora’s contract includes foundations, station construction and the erection of structural support towers for the cable car system. These works will provide the physical infrastructure needed for the aerial transportation equipment to be installed and operated.

For the Dominican company, the project represents a significant step into the international public-infrastructure market. Its operations over the past three decades have focused primarily on road infrastructure and building projects in the Dominican Republic.

Antonio Dell’Ermo, general manager of Malespín Constructora, said the company’s participation alongside Doppelmayr reflects recognition of the technical capabilities of Dominican engineering for large-scale infrastructure projects in the region.

Regional Expansion for Dominican Engineering

The San Miguelito project gives Malespín a foothold in Panama’s infrastructure market while placing Dominican construction expertise within a major public-transportation development outside the country. The partnership with Doppelmayr also brings the company into an international project involving specialized cable-car technology and urban mobility infrastructure.

Panama is developing the San Miguelito cable car as part of efforts to strengthen public transportation and integrate additional mobility systems with its existing Metro network. For passengers, the planned connection at Cincuentenario is intended to make the new service part of a broader mass-transit system rather than a standalone transportation route.
