Dajapón Fest 2026 will take place on August 1 and 2 at the Japanese Colony Park in La Vigía, Dajabón, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Japanese immigration to the Dominican Republic. The event honors the Japanese families who arrived in 1956 under a bilateral cooperation agreement between Japan and the Dominican Republic and recognizes their lasting influence on the country’s agricultural development and cultural heritage.
Held at the site of the first Japanese settlement established in the Dominican Republic, organizers describe the festival as the country’s largest gathering dedicated to Japanese culture. Activities will run daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., welcoming both descendants of Japanese immigrants and visitors interested in experiencing Japanese traditions.
A Nationwide Reunion of Japanese Dominican Communities
One of the defining features of this year’s anniversary edition is the participation, for the first time, of representatives from Japanese communities across Jarabacoa, Constanza, La Altagracia, Aguas Negras, Neiba, Duvergé, and Manzanillo. The gathering is intended to bring together families whose roots trace back to the original immigration program while strengthening ties between communities established throughout the Dominican Republic.
The reunion also offers an opportunity to highlight the shared history between Japan and the Dominican Republic, celebrating decades of cultural exchange and the contributions made by Japanese immigrants and their descendants to rural development and local communities.
Japanese Traditions on Display
Visitors can expect a wide range of cultural activities showcasing traditional and contemporary Japanese customs. The program includes authentic Japanese cuisine, martial arts demonstrations, cultural performances, traditional dances, interactive games, samurai armor exhibitions, and the popular Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance festival that brings communities together in celebration.
