Dominican Republic And Greece Sign Trade Cooperation Agreement

The Dominican Republic and Greece have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening trade, investment and supply-chain cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was signed in New York by Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The UN confirms that the General Debate is taking place in New York from September 22 through September 26, 2026.

The memorandum establishes a framework for economic cooperation and provides for the creation of a Joint Working Group. The group will explore mechanisms to strengthen bilateral economic relations and facilitate the exchange of information, strategies and perspectives between public- and private-sector representatives in both countries.

Agreement Focuses on Trade, Investment and Supply Chains

The new framework is intended to create a channel for the Dominican Republic and Greece to examine opportunities for closer economic ties. Its focus on supply chains adds a practical dimension to the broader trade and investment agenda, while the planned working group is expected to provide a mechanism for continued discussions between the two countries.

The agreement does not itself establish specific investment projects or trade results. Instead, it creates a structure for identifying opportunities and exchanging information between the public and private sectors, according to the Dominican government.

The signing took place as Bisonó conducted a series of diplomatic meetings in New York alongside the Dominican delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly. The 81st session opened on September 8, while its high-level week runs from September 22 to September 29.

Dominican Republic Also Discusses Economic Ties With Italy

During the same diplomatic agenda, Bisonó met with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. Their discussions covered the Dominican community in Italy, energy policy, tourism and opportunities to expand economic and commercial exchanges between the Dominican Republic and Italy.

The meeting placed the Greece agreement within a broader series of bilateral discussions focused on economic relations and international cooperation. The Dominican government has described the New York agenda as an opportunity to strengthen relations with international partners while advancing areas of mutual interest.

UNESCO Education Initiative Discussed in Punta Bergantín

Bisonó also accompanied President Luis Abinader in a meeting with UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany. The discussions included the possibility of establishing an institute at the Punta Bergantín Innovation Center focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known as STEM education.

The proposed institute would draw inspiration from a UNESCO model in Shanghai. Punta Bergantín is being developed as an innovation-oriented project in the Dominican Republic, and the proposal would connect the site with an educational initiative focused on STEM disciplines. The government described the initiative as a possibility under discussion rather than an established program.

Security Cooperation Also Part of the New York Agenda

Bisonó joined Abinader at a meeting of the Escudo de las Américas initiative, chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump. Representatives from countries in the region discussed coordination and cooperation against drug trafficking, cartels and other forms of transnational organized crime affecting hemispheric security.

The Dominican foreign minister also met with Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations and the UN special envoy to combat Islamophobia. Their discussion addressed the Alliance of Civilizations and possible cooperation on initiatives promoting dialogue, understanding and coexistence among different cultures and societies.

The series of meetings comes as the Dominican Republic participates in the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York. The official Dominican delegation’s agenda includes bilateral meetings, cooperation agreements and other diplomatic engagements during the high-level week.
