Vice President Raquel Peña Unveils New Public Projects in La Romana

Vice President Raquel Peña led a series of official events in La Romana province, highlighting new investments in national security, community infrastructure, and public utilities. The agenda included the inauguration of a new Armed Forces complex in Bayahibe, the reopening of the renovated San Martín de Porres Sports and Cultural Club, and the groundbreaking for new drinking water distribution networks.

New Military Complex Opens in Bayahibe

During the inauguration ceremony, Peña said the new facility strengthens the operational capacity of the Dominican Armed Forces to help safeguard the country’s coastline while supporting the government’s broader efforts to modernize national security institutions.

According to the vice president, the project reflects the administration’s commitment under President Luis Abinader to improving the capabilities of the Armed Forces so they can effectively fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.

The Bayahibe complex includes a modern video surveillance system, climate-controlled offices, internet connectivity, updated furnishings, a fully equipped kitchen with cold storage, parking facilities, a basketball court, and a gazebo. It also features a dry marina for boats, strategically located parking in the tourist area, and five vacation houses designed to accommodate military personnel.

Renovated Community Sports Center

Peña also inaugurated the remodeled San Martín de Porres Sports and Cultural Club in the Papagayo neighborhood. The project, carried out by the General Directorate for Community Development, is expected to directly benefit nearly 1,475 children, teenagers, and young adults, along with hundreds of local families who participate in sports, cultural, and community programs.

The renovation included a comprehensive upgrade of the multi-sports facility, covering its structure, roof, playing areas, locker rooms, restrooms, multipurpose hall, and equipment to provide safer and more functional facilities for residents.

Anniversary Celebrations and Water Infrastructure

As part of her visit, the vice president also participated in events marking the 126th anniversary of the municipality of La Romana. During the celebration, she highlighted the province’s contribution to the Dominican Republic’s economic and social development and noted that the government has completed more than 25 strategic projects in the area, including the Villa Hermosa Hospital, the Caleta waterfront, and improvements to the Eleoncio Mercedes Sports Complex.

The day’s activities concluded with the ceremonial groundbreaking for new drinking water distribution networks that will supply the communities of Romana del Oeste and the municipal district of Caleta. The project aims to expand access to potable water and strengthen essential public services for residents.
