Dominican Inventions And Innovations You May Not Know
The Dominican Republic is better known internationally for baseball, music and tourism than for technological innovation, yet Dominican inventors have developed ideas ranging from an early aircraft design to energy technology, electric-vehicle systems and practical everyday devices. Some have received patents through the National Office of Industrial Property (ONAPI), while others emerged long before the country's modern intellectual-property system existed.
The Dominican Republic has a history of invention that is easy to overlook. While many of the country’s best-known international contributions are cultural or sporting, Dominican innovators have also worked on aviation, energy, transportation and everyday technologies.
Zoilo Hermógenes García And The Poliplano
One of the most remarkable examples dates to the early years of aviation. Zoilo Hermógenes García, an engineer from La Vega, designed and built an aircraft known as the Poliplano in 1911. The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) recognizes García as a pioneer of Dominican aviation and credits him with designing and constructing the aircraft.
The Poliplano was notable for its unusual multi-wing configuration. García eventually took the aircraft to the United States, where it was exhibited and flown. Historical records preserved by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute also document García’s arrival in the United States in 1911 with a new airplane design that sought to address the stability of aircraft.
More than a century later, the story received renewed attention when students from INTEC and the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation worked to recreate the Poliplano’s plans. The project demonstrated that García’s work was not simply a forgotten anecdote, but part of the country’s early history of engineering and aviation.
Regus Feliz Álvarez And His Air Generator
A much more recent example comes from Regus Feliz Álvarez, a Dominican inventor whose story is unusual because his invention remained stored away for decades.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, Álvarez invented an air generator designed to convert air into energy in 1992. He did not initially have the resources to patent the idea, and the invention remained in storage for years.
His situation changed after he participated in a Dominican appropriate-technology competition. With support and training related to intellectual-property protection, he was eventually able to pursue a patent. ONAPI granted the patent for his air generator in 2020.
Álvarez also developed another practical invention: a bottle nozzle protector, which he had invented in 1995. That innovation was eventually patented in 2023.
His case illustrates an important part of the Dominican innovation story: creating an invention is only the first step. Access to financing, technical assistance and intellectual-property protection can determine whether an idea ever reaches the public.
A Dominican System For Converting Cars To Electric Power
Dominican innovation has also reached the transition from conventional transportation to electric mobility. ONAPI records a patent granted to Héctor Tolentino for a system for converting internal-combustion vehicles into effective electric vehicles.
The system was designed to convert a combustion-powered vehicle to fully electric operation while using commercially available three-phase induction motors. ONAPI highlighted the invention as an example of a locally developed technology with a practical application to transportation.
The significance of this type of innovation is straightforward: instead of designing an entirely new vehicle, a conversion system approaches electrification by modifying an existing one. That concept can be particularly relevant in countries where older vehicles make up a significant part of the transportation fleet.
There Are More Dominican Patents Than Most People Realize
These examples are not isolated. ONAPI reported that 71 inventions developed by Dominicans had been patented in the Dominican Republic over the period covered by its 2021 report. They included technologies related to energy efficiency, vehicle security, accessibility, sports training and medical applications.
One particularly distinctive example is the pedal güira, a utility model that allows the traditional Dominican güira to be played using the feet. Other patented inventions mentioned by ONAPI include an amphibious vehicle designed for people with reduced mobility, a device intended to reduce electricity consumption, an electronic anti-theft system for vehicles and equipment designed to train and guide the arm of baseball pitchers.
These inventions show that innovation does not always mean creating a revolutionary technology from scratch. Sometimes it means finding a new way to solve a familiar problem, adapting an existing product or designing equipment for a specific need.

The most interesting part of these inventions is not simply that they were created by Dominicans. They show how innovation can emerge in very different circumstances: from an engineer experimenting with aviation in the early 20th century to inventors developing practical technologies for energy, transportation and everyday life.
