Cap Cana is entering another major phase of development, with more than 50 tourism and real estate projects currently under construction and approximately 9,000 rooms being added to the destination. Fernando Hazoury, chairman of Cap Cana’s board, said the expansion could bring the destination’s operational capacity to between 18,000 and 20,000 rooms within the next 24 to 36 months.

Located in the Punta Cana area of eastern Dominican Republic, Cap Cana has developed as an integrated destination combining tourism, residential communities and a broad range of leisure activities. The scale of the current construction pipeline reflects continued investor interest in the country’s tourism sector and in destinations offering more than conventional hotel accommodation.

Cap Cana Plans To Nearly Double Its Accommodation Capacity

Hazoury said the destination’s growth strategy is aimed at substantially increasing its existing room inventory over the coming two to three years. A significant share of the units currently being built has already been sold, pointing to continued demand for tourism-related residential and hospitality products in the area.

The expansion would allow Cap Cana to accommodate a broader international market while increasing the range of lodging options available within the destination. Its development model combines hotel and residential projects with experiences designed around golf, sports, fishing, wellness, entertainment and luxury.

Infrastructure Is Being Expanded Alongside Development

The growth in accommodation capacity is being accompanied by infrastructure planning designed to support the destination as it expands. Hazoury said Cap Cana’s master plan is intended to preserve short internal travel times between different areas even as additional projects are developed.

The infrastructure network includes roads as well as electricity, drinking water, wastewater treatment and internet services. Maintaining these systems as construction accelerates will be important to the experience of both visitors and residents and to the destination’s ability to sustain long-term growth.

This integrated approach is particularly relevant as tourism destinations in the Caribbean seek to expand without allowing new development to outpace the infrastructure and services needed to support it.

A Broader Tourism Product For The Dominican Republic

Cap Cana’s development also contributes to the diversification of the Dominican Republic’s tourism offer. Alongside hotels and residential properties, the destination has built a portfolio centered on golf, sport fishing, wellness, entertainment and luxury experiences.

For international travelers, that mix provides alternatives to a traditional beach-focused vacation. For the country’s tourism industry, a wider range of experiences can help attract visitors with different interests and spending patterns while strengthening the appeal of the eastern Dominican Republic.

Construction And Tourism Create Wider Economic Activity

The impact of Cap Cana’s expansion extends beyond hotel and real estate development. New projects require construction, transportation, food services, retail, maintenance, technology and entertainment, creating demand across multiple parts of the economy.

That wider activity can also strengthen connections between tourism and domestic suppliers. As new properties open and visitor numbers grow, businesses serving the destination can benefit from additional demand, while construction projects generate activity before the new rooms even begin operating.

Strong Demand Supports Continued Expansion

The expansion comes as the Dominican Republic continues to attract strong demand from international visitors. In July 2026, hotel occupancy in the Bávaro-Punta Cana area reached 83%, compared with a national average of 76%, according to the figures cited in the announcement.

Against that backdrop, the development of destinations such as Cap Cana adds capacity while broadening the country’s tourism proposition. The combination of beaches, nature, golf, gastronomy, entertainment and high-end accommodation has helped position the eastern region as one of the Dominican Republic’s most important tourism areas.

The next phase will depend not only on completing the projects already under construction but also on maintaining infrastructure, services and planning as the destination grows. Cap Cana’s expansion illustrates the scale of investment taking place in Dominican tourism and the increasingly important role of integrated destinations in the country’s long-term tourism strategy.
