Franklin García Fermín Presents My Father and the Butterflies

Franklin García Fermín, former rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and former minister of higher education, has introduced his latest book, My Father and the Butterflies, a memoir that recounts the events following the assassination of the Mirabal sisters on November 25, 1960, during the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo.

The book launch took place at the Manuel del Cabral Auditorium of the Pedro Mir Library and brought together university officials, academics, political leaders, business representatives, students, and members of civil society. The event was led by UASD Rector Jorge Asjana David, while writer Andrés L. Mateo highlighted the publication’s historical and testimonial significance.

García Fermín explained that the work is based on the recollections of his father, Marco Tulio García Paulino, who participated in recovering the bodies of the Mirabal sisters after their murder. He described the book as both a tribute to those who resisted the Trujillo dictatorship and a contribution to preserving the Dominican Republic’s historical memory and democratic values.

At the conclusion of the event, complimentary copies of the book were distributed to attendees during a ceremony marked by strong public participation and remembrance of the Mirabal sisters and other victims of the regime.
