Dominican Republic Launches RD$1 Billion Renovation of Salvador B. Gautier Hospital
The Dominican Republic's National Health Service has begun a comprehensive renovation of Salvador B. Gautier Hospital in Santo Domingo, a project valued at more than RD$1 billion that aims to modernize one of the country's leading public referral hospitals without interrupting patient care.
The National Health Service (SNS) has officially started a large-scale renovation of Salvador B. Gautier Teaching Hospital in Santo Domingo. The project, valued at more than RD$1 billion, will be carried out in three phases and is designed to modernize the hospital’s infrastructure while strengthening its role as one of the Dominican Republic’s principal public referral centers.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, SNS Executive Director Julio César Landrón said the first phase will focus on upgrading the emergency department, which will feature 30 beds, as well as the trauma and shock unit, triage areas, laboratory services, diagnostic imaging facilities, and operating rooms.
Modern Equipment and Expanded Medical Services
As part of the modernization effort, the hospital will receive new medical equipment, including CT scanners, X-ray machines, ultrasound systems, Doppler ultrasound technology, and a hyperbaric chamber. These additions are intended to improve diagnostic capabilities and expand specialized care for patients.
The project also includes renovations to outpatient consultation areas, surgery departments, intensive care units, inpatient wards, additional operating rooms, and improvements to the hospital’s surrounding facilities.
Healthcare Services Will Continue During Construction
Landrón said medical services will not be suspended while construction is underway. Patients requiring care will be redirected to other facilities within the Public Health Network, particularly the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, to ensure continuity of treatment throughout the renovation.
Addressing Longstanding Infrastructure Challenges
Built in 1951, Salvador B. Gautier Hospital has faced years of complaints over deteriorating infrastructure and overcrowding in critical care areas. The current intervention is intended to address those longstanding issues while enhancing the hospital’s capacity to serve patients from across the country.
Once completed, the renovation is expected to provide upgraded facilities, modern medical technology, and improved conditions for both patients and healthcare professionals, reinforcing the hospital’s importance within the Dominican Republic’s public healthcare system.
