Dominican Lawmakers Demand Full Probe Into Alleged Plot Against Abinader
Lawmakers from across the political spectrum are calling for a comprehensive investigation into an alleged plot to attack Dominican President Luis Abinader at the National Congress, stressing the need to establish the facts and determine whether others were involved.
Dominican legislators from both the ruling party and the opposition have called for a thorough investigation into an alleged plan to attack President Luis Abinader, expressing concern over the potential implications for the country’s democratic institutions and the rule of law.
The alleged plot reportedly involved an attack against the president at the National Congress in Santo Domingo. Lawmakers urged security agencies and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to pursue the investigation and establish any criminal responsibility through the appropriate legal procedures.
Government and Opposition Lawmakers Call for Investigation
Representatives from different political groups described the allegations as serious and concerning, emphasizing that threats against the head of state must be addressed through a comprehensive legal investigation.
Legislators argued that any attempt to undermine the president’s security could have broader implications for the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional order.
They called on the authorities to examine all available evidence, determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged plan and establish whether additional individuals were involved.
Their response reflects a shared position among government and opposition lawmakers that the case must be handled through the country’s judicial and security institutions, without overlooking any potential responsibility.
29-Year-Old Man Arrested in San Francisco de Macorís
The calls for an investigation followed the arrest of a 29-year-old man in San Francisco de Macorís, a city in Duarte province, as part of an investigation into alleged threats against President Abinader.
The suspect was identified as Delvinson De la Cruz Sosa. His arrest followed judicially authorized searches at his residence and workplace, a hardware store known as Ferretería Molina.
During the operations, authorities seized electronic equipment and chemical substances that are undergoing examination to determine whether they are connected to the allegations.
The investigation is being conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office with support from the National Intelligence Directorate’s (DNI) cybercrime investigation division.
The authorities have not established the suspect’s criminal responsibility through a final judicial ruling.
Alleged Attack Was Linked to Constitution Day Ceremony
According to the judicial authorization for the searches, investigators are examining an alleged plan to attack Abinader on November 6, 2026, during Constitution Day commemorations at the National Congress.
Constitution Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Dominican Republic’s first Constitution on November 6, 1844, in San Cristóbal. The annual commemoration is an important date in the country’s institutional calendar.
The alleged timing and location of the suspected attack have added significance to the investigation because of the potential security implications surrounding an official national event.
However, the allegations remain under investigation, and the seized materials must be examined before conclusions can be drawn about their significance.
Public Prosecutors Seek Preventive Detention
In a subsequent development, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested three months of preventive detention against De la Cruz Sosa as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.
The hearing initially scheduled for November 5 was postponed at the request of the suspect’s defense, which sought additional time to prepare its legal arguments. The court rescheduled the hearing for November 10 at 4 p.m.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities seeking to clarify the scope of the alleged threats and determine whether other individuals may have participated.
The case has prompted calls from legislators across the political spectrum for a complete examination of the evidence, while the judicial process will determine the legal responsibility, if any, of those under investigation.
