Moca Groups Confirm Strike Over Unresolved Public Works Demands

Community groups in Espaillat province have reaffirmed plans for a strike on Monday, August 10, covering Moca, San Víctor and other communities as they press authorities to address a list of infrastructure and public-service demands.

Los Peregrinos de Moca and the Frente de Lucha Unidad y Progreso (FLUP) said during a news conference that the protest would proceed because, in their view, authorities have failed to provide responses to projects that residents have been requesting for several years.

Groups Demand Hospital and Healthcare Improvements

One of the main demands is the construction of the municipal hospital, along with the renovation and equipment of local polyclinics. The groups say improvements to healthcare infrastructure remain among the outstanding priorities for communities in the province.

The organizations are also calling for work on roads and basic utilities, including construction of the Los Rieles highway, electricity connections for the Los 21 and El Catey communities, and measures to improve access to potable water.

Roads, Bridges and Schools Also on the List

The demands extend to road infrastructure across several communities. The groups are seeking asphalt paving for roads and rural routes in Monte de la Jagua, Bonagua, Soledad, Zafarraya and El Mogote.

They are also calling for the construction of bridges over San Francisco Abajo and El Algarrobo, as well as the completion of school facilities where construction work has been halted.

In addition to infrastructure projects, the organizations have included measures to address the high cost of living among the issues behind the planned strike.

The announced action is expected to affect Moca, the provincial capital of Espaillat, as well as San Víctor and other communities. The groups’ decision to maintain the call reflects their stated position that the outstanding demands have not received sufficient responses from the authorities.
