Government Delivers 168 New Apartments at Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque
The Dominican government has handed over 168 new apartments in the Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque development in Santiago, advancing the second phase of a housing project designed to provide permanent homes for families relocated from Arroyo Gurabo.
Dominican Vice President Raquel Peña and Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, minister of the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED), delivered 168 new apartments at the Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque development in Santiago de los Caballeros, the country’s second-largest city.
The handover marks another milestone in the project’s second phase, bringing the total number of completed units in this stage to 320 apartments. The current phase will ultimately include 1,200 homes, matching the number delivered during the project’s first stage. The development is intended to provide housing for families relocated from the Arroyo Gurabo area.
Expanding Affordable Housing in Santiago
During the ceremony, Peña said each apartment offers beneficiary families an opportunity to build a more stable future. She noted that access to permanent housing provides greater security while helping parents create better opportunities for their children.
Bisonó said the project continues to improve living conditions for families that had spent years in vulnerable circumstances. He highlighted that the latest delivery represents another step toward providing safe and dignified housing for residents transitioning to permanent homes.
Investment and Community Facilities
The Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque project is being developed across nearly 297,000 square meters, with a contracted investment of approximately RD$1.02 billion. According to MIVHED, more than RD$761.4 million has already been invested in the development.
Beyond residential buildings, the complex includes recreational areas, children’s playgrounds and a baseball field, reflecting the government’s goal of creating communities that combine housing with shared public spaces and family-oriented amenities.
Additional Community Infrastructure Planned
Officials also announced plans to begin construction of the Espíritu Santo Church in Hato del Yaque and the Divina Misericordia Retreat Center in Los Melaos, within the municipality of Baitoa. The projects form part of complementary infrastructure intended to support the long-term social development of communities in Santiago.
The government said the continued expansion of Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque is part of its broader strategy to reduce the country’s housing deficit and provide quality homes for families living in vulnerable conditions.
