Dominican Republic Climbs to Fifth With 30 Gold Medals at CAC Games
The Dominican Republic strengthened its position in the medal standings at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo after collecting six more gold medals, moving ahead of Puerto Rico and surpassing the 100-medal mark for the fifth time in its history.
The host nation continued its strong performance at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games on Thursday, reaching 30 gold medals and moving into fifth place in the overall medal table.
According to the latest official standings, the Dominican Republic has accumulated 118 medals, including 30 gold, 29 silver and 59 bronze. The total places the country ahead of Puerto Rico, which sits sixth with 28 gold, 30 silver and 44 bronze medals, for a total of 102.
Six Gold Medals Boost the Host Nation
The Dominican delegation captured six gold medals during Thursday’s competition, helping extend its advantage over Puerto Rico while closing the gap with the countries above it in the overall standings.
The latest results also marked the fifth time in Dominican Republic history that its athletes have surpassed the 100-medal milestone at the Central American and Caribbean Games, highlighting another successful campaign for the host nation.
Karate and Athletics Lead the Medal Surge
Karate produced multiple gold medals for the Dominican Republic. The women’s kata team, made up of Carla Espejo, Perla Peralta, Belén Guzmán and María Dimitrova, claimed the top spot on the podium. Another gold came in women’s kumite under 55 kilograms, where Thalía Terrero secured the title.
Track and field also delivered major victories. Liranyi Alonso won the women’s 200 meters, while Rosa Ramírez earned gold in the shot put. Dominican relay teams in both the men’s and women’s 4×100-meter events also set new Games records. The women’s quartet featured Estrella de Aza, Liranyi Alonso, Fiordaliza Cofil and Patricia Sine.
The men’s relay record briefly came under review before Dominican officials successfully appealed, allowing the record to stand.
With several events still remaining, the Dominican Republic remains in contention to improve its position in the medal standings as it continues competing on home soil during the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games.
