Mets Rout Pirates As Three Dominican Pitchers Earn Wins
The New York Mets delivered one of Sunday’s biggest wins in Major League Baseball, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1, while three Dominican pitchers — Elvis Alvarado, George Soriano and Yaramil Hiraldo — also recorded victories across the league.
The MLB results from Sunday, August 9, were highlighted by several dominant offensive performances and a trio of wins by Dominican pitchers. The New York Mets overwhelmed the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1, while Philadelphia, Atlanta and Milwaukee needed extra innings to settle close games.
New York’s offense produced 15 hits in Pittsburgh, giving Sean Manaea plenty of support as he earned the victory. Jared Jones took the loss for the Pirates. Bo Bichette led the Mets with five hits, including three RBIs, while the pitching staff kept Pittsburgh to a single run.
Three Dominican Pitchers Pick Up Wins
Sunday also produced wins for three pitchers from the Dominican Republic. Elvis Alvarado, a right-hander born in Sabaneta, earned the victory as the Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3. Aroldis Chapman was charged with the loss, while Hogan Harris recorded the save for Oakland.
George Soriano earned the win for St. Louis in the Cardinals’ 7-4 victory over Colorado. The Dominican right-hander was credited with the decision after the Cardinals pulled ahead in the eighth inning. Tanner Gordon took the loss for the Rockies, and Riley O’Brien closed the game for St. Louis.
Yaramil Hiraldo, a right-hander from Santiago, Dominican Republic, also picked up a win as Baltimore defeated Texas 10-5. Hiraldo followed Cade Povich and worked two scoreless innings, helping the Orioles avoid a series sweep.
Phillies, Braves And Brewers Win In Extra Innings
Philadelphia needed 12 innings to defeat Toronto 7-6. Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs for the Phillies before Derek Hill delivered the decisive RBI single in the 12th inning. Caleb Kilian was credited with the win, while Lázaro Estrada took the loss.
Atlanta and the New York Yankees also went beyond nine innings, with the Braves prevailing 2-1 in the 10th. Michael Harris II delivered the tiebreaking single, giving Raisel Iglesias the win. Paul Blackburn was charged with the loss and Tyler Kinley earned the save.
Milwaukee completed the day’s third extra-inning victory by edging Minnesota 4-3 in the 10th. DL Hall earned the win and Yoendrys Gómez took the loss.
Cubs, Marlins And Orioles Produce Big Offensive Nights
The Chicago Cubs collected 18 hits in a 10-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Matthew Boyd strengthened his record to 8-1 after another strong outing, while Randy Dobnak was the losing pitcher.
Miami also generated significant offense, defeating the Los Angeles Angels 12-3. Griffin Conine powered the Marlins with two home runs, while Michael Petersen earned the win. Grayson Rodriguez was charged with the loss.
Baltimore scored 10 runs against Texas, with Pete Alonso hitting two home runs and driving in four runs. The Orioles finished with 15 hits, while Kumar Rocker absorbed the loss for the Rangers.
Other Sunday MLB Results
Washington defeated Cincinnati 7-1 behind Will Dion, while the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 5-3. Detroit edged San Francisco 3-1 in 10 innings, and Arizona defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2.
Tampa Bay completed a 4-1 victory over Seattle, with Ian Seymour earning the win and Steven Matz recording the save. St. Louis beat Colorado 7-4, while the Athletics held on for a 4-3 victory over Boston.
The results added several close finishes to a day that also featured some of the league’s biggest offensive margins, with the Mets, Cubs, Marlins and Orioles all scoring at least 10 runs.
