Peyton Watson Joins Cavaliers In Four-Team NBA Trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers are acquiring forward Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in a four-team trade that gives Cleveland a new option on the wing and sends Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to acquire Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets as part of a four-team NBA trade, adding a 23-year-old forward on a four-year, $88 million contract as the team reshapes its roster.
Watson, a restricted free agent, will sign with Cleveland under a deal that includes a player option and a trade bonus. The agreement also involves the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards, with several draft picks and players changing teams as part of the transaction.
Cavaliers Add Watson To Their Wing Rotation
Cleveland will send Denver an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 along with a 2032 second-round selection originally belonging to Sacramento. The Nuggets will also receive Julian Reese from Washington as part of the multi-team arrangement.
The Cavaliers will acquire a 2027 second-round pick from the Clippers before that selection is subsequently sent to Washington. Cleveland will also send Tre Mann to the Wizards in exchange for Cam Whitmore.
Watson spent his first four NBA seasons with Denver and took on a larger role during the most recent campaign. He started 40 games, the highest total of his career, while averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists.
Cleveland Addresses A Major Roster Need
The move gives Cleveland another option at forward following significant changes to its wing group. LeBron James signed with Philadelphia, ending the possibility of a third stint with the Cavaliers, while Dean Wade also left the team in free agency.
Max Strus and Wade had been Cleveland’s primary starters at the wing positions during the previous season. Strus missed the first 67 games because of a fracture in his left foot but returned in time for the playoffs and provided important scoring and defensive plays.
Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018 before being swept by the New York Knicks. Watson’s arrival gives the team a younger option as it adjusts its rotation following the departure of several established players.
Watson Brings Increased Production
Watson’s development in Denver has been reflected in his expanding role. His 40 starts last season represented a career high, while his scoring, rebounding and assist averages also reached personal bests.
For Cleveland, his combination of age, recent production and experience in a competitive Western Conference environment provides another piece for a roster undergoing substantial change. The agreement also comes after the Cavaliers began creating the necessary salary-cap flexibility by sending Dennis Schröder to Charlotte in exchange for Tre Mann.
Mann’s stay in Cleveland will therefore be brief, with the guard immediately becoming part of the subsequent deal involving Washington. The series of transactions allows the Cavaliers to redirect their roster toward a new wing combination centered in part on Watson.
