The Dominican Republic achieved its highest levels of agricultural and livestock production in the past 25 years during 2025, according to official statistics released by the Ministry of Agriculture. Authorities attributed the results to sustained sector growth, modernization efforts and investments that have strengthened the country’s farming industry.
Data compiled by the ministry’s Department of Agricultural Economics show record production across many of the nation’s key crops, highlighting the sector’s ability to meet domestic food demand while expanding its presence in international markets through agricultural exports.
Record Harvests Across Key Crops
Rice, the Dominican Republic’s staple food, reached a historic production level of 14.78 million quintals, marking the highest output on record. Corn production climbed to 2.09 million quintals, while red beans totaled 600,000 quintals. Black bean production exceeded half a million quintals for the first time, and pigeon peas finished the year at nearly 654,000 quintals.
Root crops also posted record figures. Cassava production reached 6.28 million quintals, potatoes totaled 2.87 million quintals, sweet potatoes surpassed 2.16 million quintals, yams exceeded 1.2 million quintals, and tannia production approached 1.67 million quintals, increasing food availability for the domestic market.
Plantains, Bananas and Livestock Continue to Expand
The country’s musaceae crops also recorded strong performance. Plantain production reached 4.39 million thousand units, while bananas exceeded 80.3 million bunches, supporting both domestic consumption and export markets.
Official statistics further indicate continued growth in vegetables, fruits and Asian vegetable production, segments that have helped broaden the Dominican Republic’s agricultural export portfolio and strengthen its competitiveness in international markets.
Livestock production also expanded during 2025. Higher output from the poultry, pork and cattle industries increased the domestic supply of meat and eggs, contributing to the country’s food security and agricultural value chain.
A Strategic Pillar of the Dominican Economy
An analysis of official production data covering the 2000-2025 period indicates that last year’s results represent the highest level of agricultural production recorded over the past quarter century. The figures underscore the sector’s long-term expansion and its growing capacity to meet domestic demand while serving export markets.
The Ministry of Agriculture said the results reinforce agriculture’s role as one of the country’s key economic sectors by ensuring a stable food supply, creating employment, supporting rural communities and contributing to export earnings and overall economic stability.
