Dominican Republic Opens First Free Fetal Surgery Unit

The Dominican Republic has expanded access to specialized maternal and fetal care with the opening of its first public fetal surgery unit. The facility will allow doctors to perform selected procedures while babies are still in the womb, offering treatment for serious fetal conditions before birth.

The Unit of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Fetal Therapy operates at the Doctor Julio Manuel Rodríguez Grullón Maternal and Children’s Hospital, part of the Doctor Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City in Santo Domingo. The service is part of the country’s public health network and is designed for high-risk pregnancies requiring specialized diagnosis and treatment.

Advanced Treatment Without Overseas Travel

Fetal interventions are highly specialized procedures used in selected pregnancies when treating a condition before birth can improve the baby’s prospects. Until now, access to this level of care in the Dominican Republic was limited to specialized private facilities or required families to seek treatment abroad.

The new public service is expected to reduce that financial burden. Specialists involved in the program said families previously faced costs of between $50,000 and $80,000 when traveling overseas for comparable treatments. The procedures offered through the public network will be provided free of charge to eligible patients.

The unit is intended to provide care from prenatal diagnosis through follow-up after delivery. Patients can be referred during the early stages of pregnancy for specialized evaluation and treatment according to their medical condition.

Fetal Conditions the Unit Can Treat

The service is prepared to evaluate cases involving fetal anatomical abnormalities, complicated multiple pregnancies, fetal anemia and congenital infections, among other complex conditions. Treatment options will depend on the diagnosis, the stage of pregnancy and the medical assessment of each case.

The facility combines fetal medicine and surgery with other specialties involved in high-risk pregnancies and newborn care. Its multidisciplinary team includes specialists in fetal medicine, fetal surgery, high-risk obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology, medical genetics, pediatric radiology, obstetric anesthesia and perinatal psychology.

Technology and Specialized Care

The unit has specialized ultrasound equipment and capabilities for minimally invasive procedures, as well as access to advanced diagnostic studies such as fetal magnetic resonance imaging. These tools are intended to improve the identification and assessment of fetal conditions before treatment decisions are made.

The expansion of fetal medicine within the public health system also changes the options available to Dominican families facing complex pregnancies. Instead of automatically considering international treatment for conditions requiring specialized intervention, eligible patients can now be evaluated within the country’s public network.

The service represents an expansion of high-complexity maternal and fetal care in the Dominican Republic, with the potential to make specialized treatment accessible to families who previously faced substantial medical and travel expenses to obtain it.
